Central Valley stops G-Prep in GSL volleyball

Central Valley kept pressure on first-place Mead with a win over Gonzaga Prep in Greater Spokane League volleyball action Tuesday night at G-Prep. Scores were 25-18, 18-25, 27-25, 25-17.

Sasha Montgomery had 11 kills and five aces, Tia Pau had 42 assists and Kara Nitteberg added 21 digs for the Bears. Olivia Schimmels had 11 kills for G-Prep (2-4).

Central Valley improved to 5-1 in the GSL. After a nonleague match against Freeman on Oct. 10, the Bears will host Mead on Oct. 12.

Elsewhere in the GSL, University pulled away after a close first set and beat North Central 25-21, 25-10, 25-16 at U-Hi. Kayleigh Valley had 18 kills and Kyle Collins dished out 27 assists for the Titans (5-1). Malia Conant led the Indians (0-6) with 17 assists and four aces. … Hannah Zalopany had nine kills and Taylor Ellingsen had seven aces and six digs as Mead (6-0) beat host Ferris 25-15, 25-14, 25-7. Carmen Richardson led the Saxons (2-4) with eight kills. … Mt. Spokane (5-1) also stayed on Mead’s heals in the league standings with a sweep at Rogers (1-5). Scores were 25-15, 25-20 and 25-19. Kennadie Clute had 16 kills and 12 digs and Paiton Larson dished out 25 assists to lead the Wildcats. The Pirates were led by Samantha Thompson’s 10 kills and six blocks. Mt. Spokane remains tied with University and CV for second in the GSL. … Darby Santos had 16 kills and Amanda Konynenbelt had 18 assists and three aces as Shadle Park (3-3) topped Lewis and Clark (1-5) 25-16, 25-22, 22-25, 25-22.

• GNL: Sam Geibel had 15 kills and Callie Hanson dished out 35 assists – five shy of her career high – as East Valley (6-1) swept visiting Clarkston (1-6). Scores were 25-17, 25-17, 25-17. Hanson also had six aces for an East Valley team that has won six of its past seven matches. … In other GNL matches, Rachel Dinsmoor had 19 kills and Brittani Harvey had 12 kills as Pullman (5-2) beat West Valley (1-6) 25-7, 25-16, 25-20 in Pullman. Jolene Herzog dished out 28 assists for the Greyhounds, who remain in third place in the league. … Ashley Seiler had nine kills and Kinsey Pease handed out 17 assists as Cheney (4-3) swept visiting Deer Park (1-6). Scores were 25-20, 25-12 and 25-16. Sierra English-Largent had 17 kills for the Stags.

Girls soccer

• GNL: Dakota Wickard made 10 saves and recorded her fifth shutout of the year in Pullman’s 2-0 win over visiting West Valley (7-2, 5-2). Becky Birchett scored from 18 yards out in the 29th minute to open the scoring and Cayla Whiteside added an insurance goal for the Greyhounds (10-1, 7-0) early in the second half. Pullman, which beat West Valley 1-0 earlier in the year, held a 12-4 advantage in shots. … Elsewhere in the GNL, Hannah Bowerman’s goal in the 30th minute proved to be the difference as East Valley (5-5, 4-3) blanked Clarkston 1-0 at East Valley. The Knights outshot the Bantams (5-3, 4-3) 10-1. … Three Cheney players had hat tricks and the Blackhawks (4-6, 3-4) dominated Deer Park (2-8, 1-6) 11-0 at Cheney. Jaisa Holland, Chae Brown and Sierra Dixon all had three goals apiece for the Blackhawks. Dixon scored all three of her goals in the first half, and Kendyl Cone scored the other two goals for the Blackhawks.
