In brief: Las Vegas guard commits to Eastern

Shooting guard headed to Eastern

Men’s basketball: Sir Washington, a 6-foot-3, 180-pound shooting guard from Las Vegas, made an oral commitment this week to play basketball next season at Eastern Washington.

Washington, who also had a scholarship offer from Northern Arizona, averaged 14.5 points, five rebounds and four assists last year for Clark High School.

Last season, Washington helped Clark finish second in the Southwest League behind state champion Bishop Gorman.

One of his teammates was cousin Kentrell Washington, now a freshman at Hofstra.

Washington visited the Eastern campus during the weekend, and attended the Eagles’ football game against Montana.

“I was impressed with the staff, and how they worked with the players,” said Washington, who said he also was attracted to the program’s high graduation rate.

Washington said he plans to major in business at EWU, which also impressed him with its “small town” atmosphere.

Washington said his main goal during his senior year was to improve his defense.

Keselowski likes view from top

NASCAR: There’s debate as to where a driver wants to be in the race to the Sprint Cup title.

Brad Keselowski likes the view out front.

Keselowski takes a five-point lead over Jimmie Johnson into Sunday’s race at Talladega Superspeedway, the fourth of 10 races in the Chase for the Sprint Cup championship. Keselowski doesn’t care if the rest of the field is gunning for him because he wants to be the hunted.

“I don’t know why you wouldn’t want to be leading,” Keselowski said. “… Take it and run.”
