Pirates still unbeaten

Samuel Engle found a streaking Robby Ubben, hit him in stride and Ubben scored from the top of the box to give the 11th-ranked Whitworth men’s soccer team a 1-0 win over Whitman in Northwest Conference play in Spokane.

The goal was Ubben’s fourth of the season, and they’ve all been match-winners.

Whitworth improved to 9-0-2 overall and 6-0-1 in conference matches.

The Pirates will play at third-place Puget Sound and at second-place Pacific Lutheran next weekend.

• Peter Isaac and Travis Hill each scored goals and Community Colleges of Spokane Sasquatch (4-5-1, 2-4) hung on for a 2-1 victory over Olympic (3-5-1, 2-3-1) in an NWAACC match at Spokane Falls Community College.

Volleyball

Kayla Lommori had 14 kills and Santa Clara made quick work of Gonzaga in a West Coast Conference match, beating the Bulldogs 25-10, 25-13, 25-17 in Spokane.

The Broncos (14-3, 4-1) used a 16-1 run to close out the first set.

Savannah Blinn led Gonzaga (9-9, 1-4) with nine kills.

• Despite having three players with double digits in kills, Washington State fell to Utah (10-9, 1-5) in a Pac-12 Conference match in Salt Lake City. Scores were 26-24, 27-29, 25-20 and 27-25.

Jaicee Harris had 20 kills and 10 digs for the Cougars (10-8, 0-6). Rachel Todorovich added a career-high 19 kills and Ver’Lee Hardaway added 10 kills, also a career high.

• Jalana White had 10 kills and 16 digs as Whitworth (6-9, 2-6) beat Linfield (7-9, 2-6) in five sets in a Northwest Conference match in Spokane. Scores were 25-14, 22-25, 20-25, 25-22 and 16-14.

Maddye Dinsmore added 44 assists and 20 digs for the Pirates.

Women’s soccer

Emily Fellows’ header off a corner kick in the 100th minute lifted Linfield (8-1-2, 4-1-2) to a 2-1 overtime victory over Whitworth in a Northwest Conference match in McMinnville, Ore.

Katrin Grant scored in the 40th minute to put the Pirates (6-7-1, 6-1-1) up early, but the Wildcats’ Stephanie Socotch responded eight minutes later to tie the match. Linfield held a commanding 34-6 advantage in shots.

• Five different players scored as Community Colleges of Spokane (7-1-2, 6-1-1) dumped Olympic (2-5-4, 1-4-3) 5-0 in an NWAACC match at Spokane Falls Community College.

Lateashea Currie, Tasha Luu, Kat Tsoukalas, Jamie Krediet and Rainey Pelzel all scored. Pelzel also had two assists.

• Anna Valentine’s 55th-minute goal proved to be the difference as North Idaho (8-3-1) blanked Seattle University’s club team 1-0 in a nonconference match in Seattle.

Men’s golf

Chris Williams and Team USA had an eight-stroke lead at the World Amateur Team Championship in Antalya, Turkey, when play was suspended due to darkness.

Williams, a Moscow, Idaho, native who plays for the University of Washington shot a 4-under-par 67 in his morning round and was 2 under through seven holes when darkness set in. He shares the individual lead at 14 under with Mexico’s Sebastian Vazquez.
