Delta adding flights to Asia from Seattle

From Wire Reports

NEW YORK – Delta Air Lines wants to expand service to Asia through its partnership with Alaska Airlines.

Delta plans to add a flight between Seattle and Shanghai starting June 17. Delta, which is based in Atlanta, is also proposing a flight between Seattle and Tokyo-Haneda, Japan, set to begin in March.

By next summer, Delta plans to operate more than 40 daily flights to 15 destinations from Seattle. The city is the home base of Alaska Airlines’ parent company Alaska Air Group Inc. The partnership with Alaska allows Delta to offer connecting service from Seattle to many other U.S. cities across both airlines’ networks. Delta customers can access more than 50 markets through a connection in Seattle, while Alaska customers have access to about 60 U.S. cities served by Delta.

Delta will add a fifth daily nonstop flight between Seattle and New York’s JFK Airport starting June 1.

World Bank cuts Asia growth outlook

The World Bank cut its growth forecast for Asia on Monday in a new sign of the impact of weakening global demand and warned that China’s cooling economy faces the risk of a “more pronounced slowdown.”

The bank cut this year’s growth outlook for developing Asia-Pacific economies to 7.2 percent, down from its May forecast of 7.6 percent. The bank cut its forecast for China, the region’s biggest economy, to 7.7 percent from May’s 8.2 percent.

The bank cited weak global demand due to the lackluster U.S. recovery and Europe’s recession and debt crisis.

Target hiring fewer seasonal workers

MINNEAPOLIS – Target Corp. said Monday that it plans to hire 80,000 to 90,000 seasonal workers across the country for the holiday season, down from the 92,000 it hired last year.

The decline is in keeping with the retailer’s cautious view of the upcoming holiday season.

In an interview, a spokeswoman for the retailer said that seasonal hiring is affected by current team members’ availability and whether they are seeking additional holiday hours. The company also noted that it’s been hiring throughout the year, and that about 30 percent of the seasonal people the company hired last year for the holidays stayed on in year-round positions.

Hiring for Target’s distribution centers started in July, and hiring for store workers started in October. The hiring will continue through December.

The retailer said it’s looking for workers to fill a variety of hourly positions. Open positions at the distribution centers are warehouse positions.

People interested in applying should go to www.target.com/careers.

Temporary employees needed for postal work

The Postal Service is hiring temporary employees to work during the holiday rush at the state’s mail-processing centers, including in Spokane.

Mail-handler positions are also available at other Washington centers in Yakima, Pasco and Wenatchee, and at six Puget Sound locations.

The noncareer positions pay $11 an hour and have no benefits. Applicants must be 18 or older and a U.S. citizen or resident alien. The number of hours worked will depend on mail volume.

Applications are taken online at usps.com/employment. At the website, scroll to “Washington” and then select “Casual 07” for available positions in the state.
