Cleared Los Angeles Lakers center Dwight Howard has been cleared for limited 5-on-5 scrimmages in his latest step back from offseason surgery.

Announced Veteran goaltender Dominik Hasek appears to be done with ice hockey after giving up hope of returning to the NHL again. The 47-year-old goalie said that it is “very unlikely” he would play again after no team offered him a contract amid the current lockout.

Died Veteran radio broadcaster Budd Lynch, who spent more than 60 years working for the Detroit Red Wings and became the team’s public voice, died Tuesday. He was 95. Lynch, the hockey club’s public address announcer, was the longest-tenured employee in team history.

Donnie Butcher, who played five seasons in the NBA and later coached the Detroit Pistons, has died. He was 76. He became Detroit’s coach late in the 1966-67 season, replacing player-coach Dave DeBusschere. Butcher went 52-60 at the helm. His only full season as coach was 1967-68, and he led Detroit to the postseason – the team’s only playoff appearance in a 10-season span.

Recovering Tennessee’s Derek Dooley is recovering from surgery on his fractured right hip and will coach from the press box Saturday at No. 19 Mississippi State. Dooley had experienced increasing pain in his right hip over the last two months and had surgery on Tuesday.

Transferred Florida coach Billy Donovan will have his oldest son on the bench this season – and maybe on the floor the following year. Donovan’s son, also named Billy Donovan, has transferred to Florida from Catholic University. The walk-on junior guard must sit out this season under NCAA transfer rules and will be eligible to compete for the Gators next fall. He averaged 5.9 points last year at Catholic.

Suspended The Nevada State Athletic Commission has temporarily suspended Julio Cesar Chavez Jr. after the former middleweight champion failed a drug test. Chavez tested positive for marijuana use last month.
