In brief: Cat adoption event at SCRAPS waives fees
SPOKANE VALLEY – Spokane County Regional Animal Protection Service, 2521 N. Flora Road, will have Halloween early with their Scary at SCRAPS event today.
From noon to 5:30 p.m., cat and kitten adoption fees will be waived. New owners would only need to purchase a $15 license. Pet adoptions at SCRAPS include a veterinary exam, spaying or neutering, vaccinations and a microchip.
SCRAPS is also reminding pet owners to keep animals safe over Halloween.
Keep treats, such as chocolate and candy containing the artificial sweetener xylitol, out of reach as they can be poisonous to dogs; be careful with wrappers, as aluminum foil or cellophane can cause intestinal blockage; pet costumes, although cute, can limit movement, hearing, sight or ability to breathe; and keep an eye on pets and decorations as animals may play with shiny decorations and lights.

Food distribution Friday in Millwood
MILLWOOD – Millwood Presbyterian Church, 3223 N. Marguerite Road, and Second Harvest Inland Northwest Food Bank will hand out food in the church’s parking lot Friday, from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m.
Free produce and perishable products for families in need of food assistance will be available and no appointment is necessary. Participants must be present to receive their food and should bring a box to carry food.
During the September event, 8,698 pounds of food was given to 220 families.

Model train events at fairgrounds
SPOKANE VALLEY – The River City Modelers will host a swap meet and train show on Sunday at the Spokane County Fair and Expo Center, 404 N. Havana St., in Buildings C and D, from 9:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. The event is being held jointly with the Inland Empire Railway Historical Society, now known as the Inland Northwest Rail Museum.
The group also will have open houses at the model railroad location, 1130 E. Sprague Ave., on Saturday, from 4 to 8 p.m., and Sunday, from noon to 4 p.m.

Concert by Montana Piano Trio Friday
SPOKANE VALLEY – The Montana Piano Trio will perform at the Steinway Piano Gallery, 3418 E. Nora Ave., on Friday at 7:30 p.m.
Margaret Nichols Baldridge, on violin; Fern Glass Boyd, on cello; and Steven Hesla on piano make up the trio and are all faculty of the University of Montana’s School of Music. The musicians appear regularly in performances throughout the Northwest and also perform as soloists and chamber musicians.

RIVERSIDE – Calling all brides. Barrister Winery, Beacon Hill Catering and Events and Apple Brides will host Brides Night Out at the winery, 1213 W. Railroad Ave., on Friday, from 4 to 9 p.m.
Brides-to-be planning their wedding are invited to attend the not-so-typical wedding fair. Inland Northwest wedding vendors will create real wedding scenarios in a number of themes. Apple Brides describes the event as real-life Pinterest – with wine.

Cancer awareness activities at SFCC
WEST HILLS – As part of Breast Cancer Awareness Month, the Spokane Falls Community College’s Associated Women Students will host a free breast cancer awareness event Wednesday at the SFCC Student Union Building Lounges A and B, Building 17, 3410 W. Fort George Wright Drive, from 11:30 a.m. to 12:40 p.m.
The event will feature Dr. Heidi Richardson, a Rockwood Breast Health Clinic surgeon, and members of the mammography team who will demonstrate breast exams and answer questions about the disease.
The AWS is also participating in Yoplait Yogurt’s Save Lids to Save Lives program, which redeems pink yogurt lids for 10 cents each. Proceeds go toward breast cancer research. To participate, visit savelidstosavelives.com/.

Spokane Quilt Show coming to fairgrounds
SPOKANE VALLEY – The 34th annual Spokane Quilt Show will be at the Spokane County Fair and Expo Center, 404 N. Havana St., Oct. 19 through Oct. 21. The show will be open from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. on Friday and Saturday and from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Sunday.
“Quilt Me A Garden” will feature 700 quilts, quilted clothing and wall hangings. Visitors will have an opportunity to check out free, hourly quilting demonstrations, shop at the merchant mall and quilters’ boutique for hand-crafted items, and see featured quilter Dorie Clark.
