GSL volleyball picture becomes cloudy

There’s still more volleyball to be played before there’s even more volleyball played.

The Gonzaga Prep Bullpups and Ferris Saxons have the Mt. Spokane Wildcats and University Titans to thank for that.

Kennadie Clute finished with a match-high 28 kills, Paiton Larson dished out 49 assists, and visiting Mt. Spokane needed four games to finish off Gonzaga Prep on the final night of the Greater Spokane League regular season for most teams.

The Wildcats won 25-13, 21-25, 25-23, 25-20, and the Bullpups fell to 2-7 on the season, which ties them with Ferris for the fourth and final seed to the District 8 4A tournament.

Ferris and Gonzaga Prep will play the deciding match on Monday night.

The Titans – who swept host Ferris 25-22, 25-14, 25-11 – are tied with the Wildcats at 7-2 for the top seed to the District 8 3A tournament, but University won the regular-season match and will be the No. 1 seed.

U-Hi senior Kayleigh Valley’s 12 kills paced the Titans in their win over Ferris on Thursday.

Elsewhere in the GSL, sophomore Joslyn Bopray was a dominant force at the net with eight kills and four blocks as Lewis and Clark (4-5) swept host North Central 25-15, 25-12, 25-22.

Senior Keara Rypien finished with 17 digs in her final match at NC (0-9).

Jonni Dorr had 24 assists and one block and Washington State University-bound hitter and power jump-server Taylor Ellingsen added a match-high nine kills and 10 aces in Mead’s 25-11, 25-15, 25-7 win over visiting Rogers (2-7).

The Panthers finished 9-0 in league play and will be the No. 1 seed in the District 8 4A tournament.

Central Valley (6-2), which visits Shadle Park (5-3) tonight, will be the No. 2 seed among 4A teams.

LC is the third seed, and either Ferris or G-Prep will be the fourth seed.

In the 3A tournament, U-Hi is the top seed, Mt. Spokane is second, Shadle Park is third and Rogers is fourth.

Great Northern

Joellee Buckner and Jacy Bining finished with 13 kills apiece and Colville (11-0) swept host Pullman 25-15, 25-19, 25-20 to remain undefeated in league play.

Katie Travis paced Pullman (8-3) with eight kills and one ace.

Elsewhere in the GNL, Ashley Seiler led the way with 12 kills and six aces as Cheney (6-5) beat host Clarkston (2-9) 25-13, 21-25, 25-18, 25-18. … Sierra English-Largent’s 10 kills and two blocks weren’t enough for Deer Park (1-10), which fell to visiting WV (3-8) in three games 25-22, 25-19, 26-24.

Idaho

Timberlake defeated Priest River 20-25, 25-21, 13-25, 25-23, 15-13 in the 3A District I championship at Rathdrum, which puts Timberlake through to state.

Melissa Trost finished with 12 kills to lead Priest River to a 25-18, 25-23, 25-22 victory over Kellogg in an earlier match, and Kellogg swept Bonners Ferry. Complete scores and statistics were not reported.

Priest River will play a state play-in game on Saturday in McCall-Donnelly against the runner-up from District IV.

• Scores and statistics from both games at the 2A District 1-II tournament at Moscow weren’t reported: Grangeville vs. St. Maries and Coeur d’Alene Charter Academy vs. Orofino.

• Scores and statistics from the 1A Division I match between Kootenai and host Clark Fork were not reported.

Girls soccer

Brooke Morrow scored a pair of goals and host Clarkston held on to defeat Cheney 2-1 in Great Northern League play.

Tied at 1 after the first half, Morrow scored the winner in the 78th minute as Clarkston improved to 6-5-0 in GNL play. Cheney fell to 5-6-0.

Elsewhere, Morgan Williams scored two goals and West Valley (8-4-0) trounced visiting Deer Park (2-9-0) 13-0. … Bre Daugherty and Becky Birchett each scored twice as Pullman (11-0-0) blanked visiting Colville (0-11-0) 5-0.
