CVHS hosting candidates in student-led debate Wednesday

Central Valley High School’s government club will present “Rally in the Valley II,” moderated by students Michael Butler and Zack Termath, Wednesday from 5 to 9 p.m. in the school theater at 821 S. Sullivan Road.

The event is a student-led debate with candidates in state, federal and county elections. Scheduled to appear will be Amy Biviano and Rep. Matt Shea running for state representative in the 4th District; Rich Cowan and Rep. Cathy McMorris Rodgers ( state Rep. Kevin Parker may stand in for McMorris Rodgers if she can’t make it) running for office in the 5th Congressional District, Daryl Romeyn and Shelly O’Quinn running for District 2 county commissioner, and John Roskelly and Todd Mielke, running for District 1 county commissioner.

Students will also debate several referendums which are on the ballot Nov. 6. Jesse Sheldon will argue for Referendum 74 (same-sex marriage) while McKay Demars will argue against. Will Kable will argue for Initiative 502 (marijuana legalization), while John Schutts will argue against. Nick Mortimer will argue for Initiative 1240 (public charter schools), and Hailey Reneau will argue against.

Spokane Math Circle

DG Kim, a junior at Central Valley High School, has formed the Spokane Math Circle, an organization that provides extracurricular math education.

This year’s first meeting will be Oct. 28 in the Gonzaga Herak building with professors Shannon Overbay and Logan Axon, from 3:30 to 5 p.m. The group will meet twice a month.

Harvest Festival

Valley Christian School, 10212 E. Ninth Ave., will present its annual Harvest Festival on Nov. 2 from 6 to 9 p.m.

The event includes children’s activities, food, music, a silent auction, a mechanical bull and lessons in line dancing.

All-inclusive tickets are $30 each or $100 per family.

Freeman FBLA

The Freeman High School chapter of Future Business Leaders of America participated in its cleanup of Highway 27 last week from Darknell Road to the Palouse Highway.

Students Brayden Aller, Miranda Atwood, Austin Carpenter, Jazmyne Gossett, Kyle Janssen, Elizabeth Kosanke, Anna Lee, Ben Mitchell, Shenoa Rush, Josie Schultz and adviser Scott Moore, cleaned up the 2-mile stretch of road Oct. 13 as part of the chapter’s Adopt-a-Highway program.

East Valley events

• East Valley High School, 15711 E. Wellesley Ave., will host its annual Fall Festival on Thursday from 6 to 8 p.m.

The community is welcome to participate in carnival games, a haunted maze and free candy.

The school will accept donations for Project Learning on Wellesley, a program that collects donations of cereal, peanut butter, granola bars and cereal bars.

• The school’s senior social studies classes will participate in a mock election.

All high school students will learn about Democrat, Republican and Libertarian candidates for president and will vote Nov. 6. Second period classes have been organized by population to simulate the Electoral College.
