Fifth-ranked Irish edge Brigham Young

 Theo Riddick pounded his way for a career-high 143 yards and Cierre Wood added 114 yards as fifth-ranked Notre Dame overpowered a Brigham Young defense that entered the game third in the nation against the run, earning a 17-14 win on Saturday in South Bend, Ind.

 Riddick had runs of 55 and 27, the two longest rushes of his career, to pace Notre Dame (7-0), which is off to its best start in a decade and has a big game ahead against No. 10 Oklahoma next week. The Cougars (4-4) fell to 0-3 on the road as they surrendered a season-high 270 yards rushing.

 Backup quarterback Tommy Rees, starting in place of injured Everett Golson, completed 6 of 7 passes in the first quarter for 86 yards and a TD, throwing four of those to Tyler Eifert. But Rees missed his next seven passes and the Irish attempted only three passes in the second half.

 Rees’ only completion of the second half was a 31-yard pass to TJ Jones with a little more than a minute left in the third quarter. Riddick ran the ball up the middle for 19 yards to the BYU 5. Three plays later, George Atkinson III scored on an end-around, cutting inside BYU safety Joe Sampson for the TD to give the Irish the 17-14 lead.

 The Cougars drove to the Notre Dame 31, but Nelson was sacked for a 9-yard loss. Nelson was 23-of-36 for 177 yards with two interceptions and two TD passes.

(1) Alabama 44, Tennessee 13: Amari Cooper caught seven passes for 162 yards and two of A.J. McCarron’s four TD passes as the Crimson Tide (7-0, 4-0 SEC) defeated the Volunteers (3-4, 0-4) in Knoxville, Tenn.

(3) Florida 44, (9) South Carolina 11: Jeff Driskel threw four TD passes – three of them after turnovers – and the Gators (7-0, 6-0 SEC) drubbed the Gamecocks (6-2, 4-2) in Gainesville, Fla. Florida can clinch a spot in the SEC championship game by beating No. 13 Georgia next week.

(4) Kansas State 55, (17) West Virginia 14: Collin Klein ran for four scores and threw three TD passes as the Wildcats (7-0, 4-0 Big 12) crushed the Mountaineers (5-2, 2-2) in Morgantown, W.Va. Klein outplayed fellow Heisman Trophy contender Geno Smith. Smith completed 21 of 32 passes for 143 yards and threw his first two interceptions of the year.

(6) LSU 24, (20) Texas A&M 19: Jeremy Hill rushed for a career-high 127 yards and a TD, and the Tigers (7-1, 3-1 SEC) rallied from a 12-0 deficit to beat the Aggies (5-2, 2-2) in College Station, Texas.

(7) Ohio State 29, Purdue 22: Kenny Guiton came off the bench in relief of injured QB Braxton Miller to lead TD drives in the final minute of regulation and in overtime, with Carlos Hyde scoring on a 1-yard run to clinch a victory for the Buckeyes (8-0, 4-0 Big Ten) over the Boilermakers (3-4, 0-3) in Columbus, Ohio.

(10) Oklahoma 52, Kansas 7: Landry Jones threw for 291 yards and three TDs and the Sooners (5-1, 3-1 Big 12) scored on a kickoff return and a punt return in the same game for the first time in school history while clobbering the Jayhawks (1-6, 0-4) in Norman, Okla.

(12) Florida State 33, Miami 20: Devonta Freeman ran for a pair of fourth-quarter TDs and the Seminoles (7-1, 4-1 ACC) held off the Hurricanes (4-4, 3-2) in Miami.

(13) Georgia 29, Kentucky 24: Aaron Murray completed 30 of 38 passes for 427 yards and four TDs to help the Bulldogs (6-1, 4-1 SEC) hold off the Wildcats (1-7, 0-5) in Lexington, Ky.

( 14) Clemson 38, Virginia Tech 17: Tajh Boyd ran for two TDs and passed for another and Jonathan Meeks had a 74-yard interception return score as the Tigers (6-1, 3-1 ACC) breezed past the Hokies (4-4, 2-2) in Clemson, S.C.

(15) Mississippi State 45, Middle Tennessee 3: Tyler Russell threw for 191 yards and three TDs, Johnthan Banks tied a school record with his 16th career interception and the Bulldogs (7-0, 3-0 SEC) cruised past the Blue Raiders (4-3) in Starkville, Miss.

(16) Louisville 27, South Florida 25: Teddy Bridgewater threw an 11-yard TD pass to Eli Rogers with 1:35 left, and the Cardinals (7-0, 2-0 Big East) continued their best start since 2006 with a win over the Bulls (2-5, 0-3) in Louisville, Ky.

(18) Texas Tech 56, TCU 53 (3OT): Seth Doege completed 30 of 42 passes for 318 yards and seven TDs, including three in overtime, and the Red Raiders (6-1, 3-1 Big 12) outlasted the Horned Frogs (5-2, 2-2) in Fort Worth, Texas. TCU redshirt freshman QB Trevone Boykin was 26 of 44 for 332 yards with four TDs and two interceptions.

(19) Rutgers 35, Temple 10: Gary Nova threw four TD passes in the second half and the Scarlet Knights (7-0, 4-0 Big East) rallied from a 10-0 halftime deficit to beat the Owls (3-3, 2-1) in Philadelphia.

Toledo 29, (21) Cincinnati 23: Bernard Reedy scored on a 91-yard kickoff return – his third special teams TD in three weeks – to help the Rockets (6-1) upset the Bearcats (5-1, 1-0 Big East) in Toledo, Ohio.

(23) Michigan 12, Michigan State 10: Brendan Gibbons made a 38-yard field goal with 5 seconds left and the Wolverines (5-2, 3-0 Big Ten) rallied past the Spartans (4-4, 1-3) in Ann Arbor, Mich. It was the 900th win for Michigan, the winningest program in college football history.

Nebraska 29, Northwestern 28: Taylor Martinez threw for 342 yards and three TDs and the Cornhuskers (5-2, 2-1 Big Ten) rallied from 12 points down in the fourth quarter to beat the Wildcats (6-2, 2-2) in Evanston, Ill.

Wisconsin 38, Minnesota 13: James White rushed for 175 yards and three scores to carry the Badgers (6-2, 3-1 Big Ten) over the Golden Gophers (4-3, 0-3) in Madison, Wis.

Vanderbilt 17, Auburn 13: Zac Stacy ran for 169 yards and a TD and the Commodores (3-4, 2-3 SEC) held off the Tigers (1-6, 0-5) in Nashville, Tenn.

Princeton 39, Harvard 34: Backup QB Quinn Epperly’s 36-yard TD pass to Roman Wilson with 13 seconds left capped a 29-point fourth quarter and sent the Tigers (4-2, 3-0 Ivy League) to a victory over the Crimson (5-1, 2-1) in Princeton, N.J. The loss snapped Harvard’s nation-leading 14-game win streak.

Navy 31, Indiana 30: Keenan Reynolds completed a 4-yard TD pass to Matt Aiken with 2:02 to play as the Midshipmen (4-3) rallied to beat the Hoosiers (2-5) in Annapolis, Md. Navy beat a Big Ten opponent for the first time since 1979 when it won at Illinois 13-12.

Air Force 28, New Mexico 23: Wes Cobb scored on a trio of 1-yard runs and the Falcons (4-3, 2-1 MWC) overcame Kasey Carrier’s Mountain West Conference- record 338 yards rushing to beat the Lobos (4-4, 1-2) in Air Force Academy, Colo.

Eastern Michigan 48, Army 38: Tyler Benz had career highs of 369 yards passing and five TDs and the Eagles (1-6) defeated the Black Knights (1-6) in Ypsilanti, Mich., for their first win of the season.

Penn State 38, Iowa 14: Bill Belton ran for 103 yards and three TDs and the surging Nittany Lions (5-2, 3-0 Big Ten) throttled the Hawkeyes (4-3, 2-1) in Iowa City, Iowa, for their fifth straight win.

Texas 56, Baylor 50: Joe Bergeron ran for 117 yards and five TDs and the Longhorns (5-2, 2-2 Big 12) outlasted the Bears (3-3, 0-3) in Austin, Texas.
