Lost a heroic battle with cancer on Thursday, October 18, 2012 at his home of 65 years in Spokane, WA.

He was born on April 22, 1947 in Spokane to Harold and Lela Burgen.

James graduated from Shadle Park High School in 1965 and went on to earn his Bachelor’s degree and then Master’s degree in education at Eastern Washington University.

He was an Eagle Scout and Scout Commissioner, earning the Silver Beaver Award and a Citation of Heroism.

James served in the United State Navy and was a Vietnam Veteran.

He was a 65 year member of Our Lady of Lourdes Cathedral in Spokane.

James was a mentor, friend, teacher and an inspiration to all.

He is survived by his sister, Susan (Erich) Zeisler; nieces, Kimberly (DeWayne) Golder and Joanne (Gary) Yingling; nephew, Timothy (Alison) Zeisler; great-nieces and nephews Ericha, Austin, Todd, James, Arianna, and Nicholas; and his best friend and caregiver, Sweety.

James was preceded in death by his parents.

A funeral service will be held at the Cathedral of Our Lady of Lourdes, 1115 W Riverside Ave, Spokane, WA on October 22, 2012 at 10 am.

Visitation will be held prior to the funeral service at Our Lady of Lourdes at 9 am.
