Be civil in school zones

I am one of the crossing guards at the corner of 33rd Street and Grand Boulevard. Every day my co-worker, Heidi Becker, and I assist up to 100 students across three lanes of busy traffic. We will be doing this, mornings and afternoons, every school day.

If you are the type of driver who is unable to observe the 20 mph speed limit for 10 blocks through two school zones, who is unable to put down your phone, who drives around or through our flags, who will drive up on the sidewalk in order to jump ahead of other cars, or who makes illegal U-turns to avoid stopping, we would like to encourage you to find another route.

If you are the type of person who chooses to express him or herself by yelling profanity, flipping us off or displaying other ugly behavior in front of children, we would like to encourage you to take another route.

On the other hand, if you are the type of person who appreciates our efforts in keeping kids safe, I’ll take a tall Americano (no cream) and Heidi likes non-fat lattes.
