HEMPSTEAD, N.Y. (AP) — A second man has been arrested in connection with the shootings that resulted in the deaths of a New York policeman and a carjacking victim.

Nassau County Assistant District Attorney Mitchell Benson says the man is accused of trying to assist the suspected gunman after the shootings.

Prosecutors in the neighboring borough of Queens say Gerald Williams was arrested on weapons possession charges.

Earlier Thursday, the ex-convict suspected of pulling the trigger made a court appearance on first-degree murder charges.

Police packed the courtroom for Darrell Fuller’s appearance in Hempstead (HEHM’-stehd).

Fuller is accused of killing a policeman who suspected he had been involved in a hit-and-run car accident on Tuesday. Authorities allege Fuller then killed the second victim while stealing his vehicle.

Fuller was represented by a legal aid attorney, who declined to comment.
