Prince George ends Chiefs’ three-game streak

PRINCE GEORGE, British Columbia – The third time was a charm, but not for the Spokane Chiefs.

Alex Forsberg and Marc McNulty scored second-period goals, both off assists from Troy Bourke and Chase Witala, as the Prince George Cougars stopped the Spokane Chiefs 4-2 on Wednesday in Western Hockey League play.

Prince George (6-7-1-0) snapped Spokane’s three-game winning streak, including the last two against the Cougars. Spokane defeated PG 3-2 last Saturday and 6-1 on Tuesday.

Spokane dropped to 9-4-0-0, with 18 points. The Chiefs are in second place in the U.S. Division, two points behind Tri-City.

Spokane led 1-0 after Mike Aviani’s seventh goal of the season, set up by Mitch Holmberg and Adam Helewka at 8 minutes, 27 seconds of the first period.

Brett Roulston’s breakaway goal late in the first period tied the game. PG took control with two second-period goals and added Caleb Belter’s empty-netter with less than 3 minutes left. Spokane’s Brenden Kichton scored a late power-play goal.

Spokane also plays its next two games on the road, Friday at Everett and Saturday at Tri-City, before returning home Tuesday to play Seattle to start a six-game homestand.
