Van Pelt uses 11 birdies to grab lead at CIMB

Golf: Bo Van Pelt missed a chance at a rare 59 on Saturday when he had double-bogey on the 18th at the CIMB Classic, an unofficial PGA Tour event in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia.

Van Pelt, the defending champion, had four birdies in the first six holes, then five in a row from the eighth on the par-71 Mines Resort and Golf Club course. He had two more birdies to give him 11 in round and only needed one more to join an elite club.

He hit his approach on No. 18 into the greenside bunker and needed three putts, finishing with a 9-under 62 for a share of the third-round lead with Robert Garrigus at 16 under.

Tiger Woods started aggressively with five birdies in the first eight holes but had three bogeys and a double-bogey on the back nine and finished at 69 to be in a group of five players tied at 11-under, including former Pullman resident Kirk Triplett. Triplett is tied for 11th overall with a total of 143.

• Calcavecchia increases lead at AT&T Championship: Mark Calcavecchia shot a 3-under 69 to increase his lead to four strokes after the second round of the Champions Tour’s AT&T Championship in San Antonio.

Calcavecchia, three strokes ahead after the completion of the rain-delayed first round, had an 8-under 136 total on TPC San Antonio’s Canyons Course.

• Park leads by 2 strokes: Inbee Park of South Korea shot an 8-under 64 to take a two-stroke lead after the third round of the Taiwan Championship in Yang Mei.

Park had two eagles and five birdies and was at 18-under 198 at the Sunrise Golf and Country Club.

Federer, Del Potro to meet in Swiss final

Tennis: Roger Federer and Juan Martin del Potro advanced to the Swiss Indoors final in Basel, Switzerland, setting up a rematch of their epic semifinal at the Olympics.

Top-ranked Federer brushed aside Paul-Henri Mathieu of France 7-5, 6-4 in the semifinals after Del Potro eased to a 6-2, 6-2 win over third-seeded Frenchman Richard Gasquet.

• Williams beats Radwanska: Serena Williams cruised into the final of the WTA Championships by beating Agnieszka Radwanska of Poland 6-2, 6-1 and will play Maria Sharapova for her third title at the event in Istanbul.

Sharapova beat Victoria Azarenka 6-4, 6-2 in the second semifinal, a day after Azarenka had made sure of finishing the year as the top-ranked player.

• Ferrer ousts Dodig: Top-seeded David Ferrer reached the Valencia Open final for a fourth time, beating Ivan Dodig of Croatia 6-4, 6-7 (5), 6-1 in Spain.

Ferrer will face Alexandr Dolgopolov, who won the other semifinal over Jurgen Melzer 6-4, 6-2.

Baylor unanimous choice for No. 1

Women’s Basketball: Brittney Griner and Baylor are No. 1 in the Associated Press’ preseason Top 25 poll.

Connecticut, Duke, Stanford and Maryland round out the first five.

Tennessee is No. 20 – the Lady Vols’ lowest ranking in the preseason poll since the first poll in 1976-77.

Wondolowski ties MLS goal mark

Miscellany: Chris Wondolowski tied the MLS single-season record with his 27th goal and the San Jose Earthquakes wrapped up the regular season with a 1-1 draw against the host Portland Timbers.

Wondolowski scored in the 24th minute, matching the record set by Roy Lassiter of Tampa Bay in 1996.

• Slovenia’s Maze wins giant slalom: Tina Maze of Slovenia won the season-opening women’s World Cup giant slalom in Soelden, Austria, in a time of 2 minutes, 31.41 seconds.

American Lindsey Vonn went out in the second run after hooking a gate with her left arm and sliding off the course but escaped injury.

• Clukey hangs on to win luge title: Julia Clukey ended Erin Hamlin’s five-year reign as USA Luge’s national women’s champion, finishing off a narrow victory for the title in Lake Placid, N.Y.

Clukey finished four runs down the Mount Van Hoevenberg track in 2 minutes, 59.953 seconds.

Rockin Amadeus races to upset win

Horse Racing: Rockin Amadeus, a 17-1 long shot driven by Yannick Gingras, raced to a big upset victory in the Breeders Crown at Woodbine in Toronto, rallying to beat favored Captaintreacherous in the $591,240 2-Year-Old Colt Pace.

• Afleeting Lady, Buffum win Belmont: Afleeting Lady and Buffum won the $150,000 handicap stakes at Belmont Park in New York.

• Lady Ten tops Autumn Miss Stakes: Lady Ten held off a furious rally from Customer Base to win the $100,000 Autumn Miss Stakes by a neck for trainer Bob Baffert at Santa Anita in Arcadia, Calif.
