Williams WSGA Player of Year

Chris Williams of Moscow, Idaho, the dominant amateur in the Northwest the last couple of years, has been named the Men’s Player of the Year for 2012 by the Washington State Golf Association.

The senior standout at the University of Washington, whose 2011 resume included selection to the U.S. Walker Cup team, won the Washington State Men’s Amateur by 10 strokes, was qualifying medalist and champion of the grueling Western Amateur, was a quarterfinalist in the U.S. Amateur and was the runner-up in the World Team Amateur in 2012.

Williams holds the No. 1 spot in the World Amateur Rankings and received the Mark H. McCormack Medal for 2012 that recognizes that lofty position.

Prep volleyball

Northeast 1B play-in: Cristina Castro had 15 assists and 10 aces and Mariah Stearns 10 assists and four blocks to lead Wellpinit to a come-from-behind 23-25, 25-15, 25-22, 25-14 victory at Valley Christian for the final berth to districts. VC was eliminated.

Wellpinit plays at No. 1 Cusick Thursday at 4 p.m.

College volleyball

Junior Allison (Walker) Baker had 22 kills to lead five Vandals with 10 or more and added 11 digs for her 16th double-double of the season, but Idaho (11-13, 9-5 WAC) could’t survive in its 10th five-set marathon of the season, falling 28-26, 22-25, 22-25, 30-28, 17-15 in a WAC match at Denver (14-10, 7-6).

Ashley Christman added a career-high 14 kills and Jenny Feicht had her fifth double-double with 40 assists and 16 digs for UI.

Men’s soccer

Ryan Hollingshead’s goal off a chip pass in front of the goal in the 12th minute gave No. 7 UCLA (11-2-2, 6-1-0 Pac-12) a 1-0 Pac-12 victory at No. 24 Washington (11-4-3, 6-1-2).
