Deer Park rallies for football win
Down at halftime, Doug Densiton guided Deer Park back.
Densiton threw two second-half touchdowns and the Stags clamped down on defense in a 28-18 comeback win over Chewelah in both teams’ football season opener Friday night at Chewelah.
Densiton completed 10 of 20 passes for 148 yards and accounted for all four of Deer Park’s scores. He ran for both of the Stags’ first-half touchdowns.
Derek Smith powered Chewelah in the first half. Smith ran for two touchdowns and found Ben Johnstone on a 15-yard passing connection.
The Cougars led 18-14 at the half, but couldn’t hold off the Stags after halftime.
Ellensburg 28, West Valley 14: The Bulldogs came alive in the fourth quarter – outscoring the Eagles 15-0 – and Ellensburg won at West Valley. Tyler Stavnes threw for a touchdown and ran for a score to give the Eagles (0-1) a 14-6 lead, but Ellensburg scored the final 22 points of the game.
Lewiston 20, Lakeland 7: The Bengals (1-0) scored a touchdown in each of the first three quarters and beat the visiting Hawks (0-1). Sawyer Meachem opened the scoring with a 20-yard interception return. Drew Melton and Austin Posleitner then scored on 1-yard runs in the second and third quarters, respectively, to give Lewiston the lead for good.
Pullman 41, Lakeside 32: Justin Cillay ran for two scores and threw for another as the Greyhounds (1-0) climbed back from a 20-7 first-quarter deficit and beat the Eagles (0-1) in Nine Mile Falls. Coleton Collins caught two touchdown passes from Keith Kovac to give Lakeside the early advantage, but Pullman outscored Lakeside 34-12 after the first quarter.
East Valley 42, Sandpoint 14: The Knights (1-0) built a comfortable first-half lead and raced past the visiting Bulldogs (0-1). Cole Hofstee scored two first-half touchdowns. He opened the scoring with a 4-yard scamper and then, following a Taylor Watkins touchdown pass to Dan Kaplin-Jensen, Hofstee returned a punt 68 yards for a touchdown that gave East Valley a 21-0 lead. East Valley gained 423 yards on the ground, compared to 143 for the Bulldogs. Adam Talley had 193 rushing yards and Issac Jordon ran for 123 yards for the Knights.
Lake City 27, Kennewick 27: The Timberwolves (0-1-1) scored 10 fourth-quarter points and tied with the Lions in Coeur d’Alene. Jerry Louie-McGee had touchdown runs of 57 and 63 yards for Lake City.
Clarkston 8, Moscow 7: Austin Hansen threw a 3-yard touchdown pass to Robby DeVleming in the fourth quarter and the Bantams (0-1) edged the visiting Bears (0-2). Kyle Snyder threw a 45-yard touchdown pass to Brady Braun for Moscow’s TD in the third quarter.
Medical Lake 39, St. Maries 32: Kasey Kelly returned an interception 32 yards late in the fourth quarter to give the Cardinals (1-0) a win over the host Lumberjacks (0-1). Luke Feasline completed 20 of 35 passes for 350 yards and four touchdowns for Medical Lake.
Priest River 36, Kettle Falls 22: Cameron Riley ran for 179 yards and three scores to lead the Spartans (1-0) past the visiting Bulldogs (0-1). Riley also converted 13 of 20 passes for 179 yards and a touchdown. Conner McKern threw for three touchdowns for Kettle Falls.
Cusick 54, Wallace 22: Ryan Sample completed 16 of 23 passes for 410 yards and seven touchdowns as the Panthers (1-0) routed the host Miners (0-1). Cusick’s Derick Bluff had seven catches, four of which went for touchdowns.
Wellpinit 72, St. John-Endicott 20: A.J. Kieffer scored on runs of 50, 89 and 68 yards in the first quarter to set the tone for the Redskins (1-0) in a rout of the visiting Eagles (0-1). Kieffer finished with 214 rushing yards and four touchdowns, and Kyle McCrae scored twice and racked up 217 yards on the ground. Wellpinit’s Zach Wynecoop threw for three scores and ran for another.
Colton 66, Wilbur-Creston 40: Jack Straughan accounted for eight touchdowns as Colton (1-0) beat visiting Wilbur-Creston (0-1). Straughan passed for five touchdowns, ran for two and returned a kickoff for another score. Colton scored 32 points in the first quarter.
Selkirk 64, Northport 14: The Rangers (1-0) jumped ahead early and cruised past the visiting Mustangs (0-1) at Ione. Trevor Grant ran for 223 yards and three touchdowns, including an 11-yard scamper for the game’s first points. Dominic Cain threw for four touchdowns as Selkirk built a 50-14 first-half lead.
Davenport 44, Lake Roosevelt 13: After the Raiders’ Justin Dewinkler opened the scoring with a 43-yard run, Wyatt Evers turned the momentum in the Gorillas’ favor with three straight scores and Davenport (1-0) beat visiting Lake Roosevelt (0-1). Evers scored on two short runs in the first quarter and then returned an interception for another score in the second quarter that gave Davenport a 22-7 lead.
Kootenai 52, Lakeside (Idaho) 6: Simeon Desautel scored four of the games’ first six touchdowns and the Warriors (1-0) cruised past the Knights (0-1) in Harrison. Desautel finished with 162 yards on 15 carries and three rushing touchdowns. He also returned a kickoff 70 yards for another score.
Tri-Cities Prep 42, Liberty 6: The Jaguars jumped out to a 28-0 first-half lead and beat the visiting Lancers (0-1).

Columbia-Inchelium 52, Republic 42: Dustin Wyborney threw for two touchdowns and ran for another as the Lions (1-0, 1-0) jumped ahead early and held off the visiting Tigers (0-1, 0-1). Dustin Elliott ran for 160 yards and two touchdowns and Quentin Holford hauled in three touchdown catches. Preston Hooper threw for three scores for Republic.
