NEW YORK (AP) — A teacher at a Catholic school in New York says that teenager killed when he stuck his head out of a bus hatch on the way to a sweet 16 party was a beloved student.

Police say Daniel Fernandez was among 65 teens aboard the double-decker bus Friday night as it crossed the George Washington Bridge from New York City on the way to a party in New Jersey. He was fatally stuck when the bus passed under a highway overpass.

The 16-year-old was pronounced dead at a hospital.

Fernandez’s English teacher at St. Francis Preparatory School was in tears Saturday when she learned he died. She says he was an “adorable, low-key kid” with a sweet smile and lots of friends who was popular “with the girls.”
