Straub a risky choice

Mayor David Condon probably knows that he’s taking a risk on his choice for chief of police in Spokane. I’m sure he has his reasons, but I’d sure like to know what they are.

There is a deep-rooted and justifiable mistrust of the Spokane Police Department, and for good reason. They’ll shoot you if they merely think you might be a threat! Alternative methods to subdue a potential threat don’t seem to be in their operating manual.

A metro police force has been a goal of many citizens for at least a decade. It makes sense both financially and in efficiency. My hope is that he’s laying the groundwork for a consolidation of the Spokane County Sheriff’s Office and Spokane Police Department to function as one police force. That said, it won’t happen as long as the Police Guild maintains its stranglehold on the people of Spokane through their position of superiority and unaccountability over the citizens of this city.
