Gonzaga’s Gunsolus earns West Coast League MVP

Gonzaga University’s Mitchell Gunsolus was named the 2012 West Coast League most valuable player.

The third baseman played this summer for the Wenatchee AppleSox and led the league with 48 RBIs while hitting .371 with three home runs. The Kenmore, Wash., native led his team to the 2012 WCL title.

The AppleSox finished 41-19 and ranked No. 6 by Perfect Game USA in its end-of-season rankings.

Award

Former Whitworth College basketball coach Jim McGregor has been selected for induction into the Portland Interscholastic League Hall of Fame.

His induction will take place on Oct. 14 in Portland.

Racing

Spokane resident Sister Madonna Buder, 82, set a world record last weekend at the 30th Ironman Canada in Penticton, B.C.

Buder became the first woman older than 80 to complete the triathlon.

She finished in 16 hours, 32 minutes. She completed the 2.4-mile swim portion of the event in 1:36.09.
