Spokane Police said they arrested a man on first-degree assault charges after he stabbed another man in the throat on the South Hill near the 700 block of South Freya just before noon Sunday.

KHQ is reporting police located 40-year-old Ian Bennington near the intersection of Third and Freya after an eye-witness positively identified him as the suspect.

The victim received help from a doctor outside a church in the 1100 block of South Freya after he walked there, KHQ reported, adding that he is now in stable condition.

Bennington reportedly told police the stabbing was in self-defense because the victim first punched him in the face.
