Rubosky leads GU to victory

Kasey Rubosky continued to deliver for the Gonzaga Bulldogs women’s soccer team on Sunday in Nashville, Tenn.

Rubosky scored the only goal of the match at the 26:36 mark of the first half to lift the Bulldogs (5-1) to a 1-0 win over the Vanderbilt Commodores (2-2-1) in nonconference play.

Rubosky, a sophomore midfielder, also tallied the only goal in Gonzaga’s 1-0 victory over Austin Peay on Friday.

GU is off to its best start in school history.

Bulldogs keeper Susan Brown made four saves en route to the shutout.

• Callie Simpkins booted a pair of goals to power the fourth-ranked Duke Blue Devils (4-1) to a 4-0 win over the Washington State Cougars (4-1) on the final day of the USC Futbol Classic in Los Angeles.

Duke took the lead for good on a goal by Kim DeCesare 23 minutes into the match.

The all-time series between the two schools is now tied 1-1.

• Sara Paul assisted on a pair of goals, including one by her sister Jennifer, as the Wyoming Cowgirls (6-1) scored three times in the first half en route to a 4-1 nonconference victory over the Eastern Washington Eagles (0-3-1) in Laramie, Wyo.

Eastern’s lone goal came 7 minutes into the second half when Kasey McNeill took a pass from Alisha Stott and zipped the ball into the net.

• Mackenzie Akins scored off a rebound in the second overtime to propel the Montana Grizzlies (3-3) to a 3-2 victory over the Idaho Vandals (2-4) in the Boise State tournament.

After a scoreless first half, the Vandals took a 1-0 lead on a goal by Meli Cortez from 12 yards out. The Grizzlies answered at 57:11 on a goal by Lauren McCreath to knot the score. Idaho retook the lead when Chelsea Small found the net on a penalty kick at 59:34. Montana pulled even 15 minutes later on a score by Erin Craig off a corner kick, setting the stage for Akins.

• Kelsie Ng and Ashlyn Crossan each notched two first-half goals and the visiting Peninsula College Pirates rolled to a 5-0 win over the North Idaho Cardinals (2-2).

Men

Achille Campion scored a pivitol goal on a penalty kick in the 80th minute to carry the fourth-ranked UC Santa Barbara Gauchos (2-0-1) to a 3-0 victory over the Gonzaga Bulldogs (2-2) on the final day of the Gonzaga Nike Classic.

In the other match, Oregon State routed Manhattan 6-0 to win the tourney title by virtue of a tiebreaker with UCSB.
