Farmers markets boost SNAP benefits
The Spokane Farmers Market, Thursday Market in the South Perry District and West Central Marketplace are testing a pilot program that will match some SNAP/EBT benefits to encourage purchases of fresh produce and foods.
For every $5 of SNAP/EBT customers spend at the markets, they will receive $2 in “Fresh Match” bucks – up to $6 per market. The match money is good for all SNAP-eligible purchases. Catholic Charities of Spokane oversees the pilot, funded by an anonymous donor and supported by the Washington State Farmers’ Market Association. It ends Oct. 11.
Program coordinator Brian Estes said in a news release, “We hope that lessons learned in the pilot can help lead the way for similar initiatives across the Northwest.”
The Spokane Farmers Market is open 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. Wednesday and Saturday at 10 W. Fifth Ave. Thursday Market in the South Perry District is Thursdays from 3 to 7 p.m. at 924 S. Perry St. The West Central Marketplace is Tuesdays from 3 to 6 p.m. at 1428 W. Broadway Ave.
