News Summary: Study aims at kid safety on tractors

The Associated Press Associated Press

DEADLY HARVEST: Accidents involving farm machinery are the leading cause of death among children who work in agriculture. Tractor accidents alone take two dozen or more young lives each year.

RULES NIXED: The Labor Department tried to address the problem this year with rules to limit children operating farm equipment. The Obama administration dropped the proposal after farm families and groups objected.

DIFFERENT APPROACH: Scientists at the University of Iowa and the Marshfield Clinic in Wisconsin are using a driving simulator to look at how children make decisions while driving tractors. The results could be used to revise voluntary guidelines.
