East Valley pulls past Lakeland in fourth quarter

East Valley broke open a close game with 24 fourth-quarter points and the Knights went on to beat Lakeland 38-14 in a nonleague game Friday night at East Valley.

The Knights’ Adam Talley scored both of his rushing touchdowns in the fourth quarter. East Valley’s Taylor Watkins completed 18 of 31 passes for 252 yards and two touchdowns. J.T. Phelan had eight grabs for 70 yards, one a six-yard touchdown catch in the third quarter.

Lakeland’s Tyrel Derrick gave the Hawks (0-2) a 7-6 lead with a 70-yard interception return for a touchdown in the second quarter.

East Valley improved to 2-0.

Chewelah 45, Colville 21: Derek Smith threw for 206 yards and three touchdowns and scored twice on the ground as the Cougars (1-1) defeated the host Indians (1-1). Chewelah’s Cordell Bean added three scores – two rushing and one receiving.

Medical Lake 22, Bonners Ferry 16: Casey Kelly hauled in a 44-yard touchdown pass from Adam Paulson in the fourth quarter to break a tie and give the Cardinals (2-0) a win over the visiting Badgers (0-3). Kelly finished with four catches for 90 yards and the game-winning score.

Priest River 27, Newport 24: R.C. Akre threw a 40-yard touchdown pass to Cameron Riley with 1 minute, 23 seconds left and the Spartans (2-0) hung on to beat the host Grizzlies (0-1).

West Valley 30, Moscow 0: A.J. McKinnley ran for two touchdowns to lead the Eagles (1-1) past the host Bears (0-3). Chance Roullier hauled in a 30-yard touchdown pass from Tyler Stavnes to open the scoring in the first quarter.

Post Falls 31, Sandpoint 13: Patrick Agueros ran for 204 yards on 26 carries and scored two second-half touchdowns to lead the Trojans (1-1) past the visiting Bulldogs (0-2). Post Falls led by four points heading into the fourth, then scored 14 unanswered points to put the game away. With Sandpoint driving late in the fourth, the Trojans’ Curtis Triplett returned an interception 99 yards for the final touchdown of the game.

Reardan 28, Kittitas 24: The Indians (1-1) overcame a 10-point second-half deficit to beat the visiting Coyotes. Kameren Bergeron scored on a 59-yard run in the third quarter to cut the deficit to three. Charlie Eldred then scored on a 13-yard scamper in the fourth to put the Indians on top. Bergeron finished with 146 yards on 14 carries and two touchdowns.

Freeman 28, Pullman 14: Wyatt Smith threw four touchdown passes as the Scotties (1-1) topped the visiting Greyhounds (1-1). Markus Goldbach caught the first and last touchdown passes for Freeman. Kian Gentleman and Max Laib also hauled in passes for scores.

LaCrosse-Washtucna 34, Kootenai 28: Bo Rice caught a 10-yard touchdown pass from Joey Guske with 1:30 left to give the Tigercats (1-1) a comeback-win over the visiting Warriors (1-2). Marshall Willms threw for 302 yards and two scores for Kootenai, which squandered an eight-point fourth-quarter lead.

Lind-Ritzville/Sprague 21, Warden 14: Dustin Kommes scored his second rushing touchdown of the game in the third quarter to break a tie and the Broncos (1-0) held on to beat the host Cougars.

Cheney 56, Omak 0: Austin Kautzman ran for three scores and the Blackhawks (1-1) racked up 407 total rushing yards in a rout of the visiting Pioneers. Marquis Allen ran for 159 yards on six carries and scored twice as Cheney raced out to a 28-0 first-quarter lead.

Deer Park 35, Riverside 7: After giving up the first score of the game, the Stags’ defense tightened up in a rout of the visiting Rams (0-2). Deer Park (2-0) had four interceptions. Doug Denniston, who carried the Stags the previous week, came up big again with three touchdown passes to Dalton Hansen. Hansen finished with seven receptions and 157 yards.

Colfax 21, Asotin 8: Brady Ellis threw for 154 yards and a touchdown and added a rushing score in the Bulldogs’ season-opening win over the visiting Panthers. Colfax (1-0), which forced four turnovers, held Asotin to 63 rushing yards on 32 carries.

Salmon River 44, Colton 26: Leighton VanderEsch scored five rushing touchdowns as Salmon River bullied the host Wildcats (1-1).

Tonasket 26, Kettle Falls 6: The Tigers scored the final 19 points of the game and raced past the host Bulldogs (0-2). Brandon Thomas led Kettle Falls with 128 rushing yards on 21 carries and scored the Bulldogs’ lone touchdown, which came in the first quarter.

Oroville 19, Springdale 12: The Hornets scored 13 unanswered points in the second half and beat the visiting Chargers (0-1). Josh Anderson scored two rushing touchdowns for Springdale.

Liberty Christian 46, Almira/Coulee-Hartline 0: Mike Olson threw two touchdown passes and ran for another as the Patriots routed the host Warriors (1-1).

Cusick 48, Odessa-Harrington 14: Ryan Sample threw for two scores and ran for another to guide the Panthers (2-0, 1-0) past the host Titans (1-1, 0-1). Derrick Bluff added two rushing touchdowns for Cusick.

Waterville 32, Wilbur-Creston 14: Mitchell Clements ran for two touchdowns and threw for another in the decisive first quarter and the Shockers (1-1, 1-1) beat the host Wildcats (0-2, 0-1). Jason Esquivel caught two touchdown passes from Trystan Rosman for Wilbur-Creston.

Northeast 1B North

Wellpinit 58, Columbia-Inchelium 36: The Redskins (2-0, 1-0) scored two touchdowns in each quarter and cruised to a win over the host Lions (1-1, 0-1). A.J. Kieffer led Wellpinit with five rushing touchdowns, four coming in the second half. Dustin Elliot ran for three scores to lead Columbia-Inchelium.

Northport 58, Curlew 14: Dylan Masters returned two interceptions for touchdowns to lead the Mustangs’ (1-1, 1-1) rout of the visiting Cougars (0-2, 0-1). Northport’s Jeremiah Johnson added three rushing touchdowns and two passing scores.

North Star League

Wallace 44, Lakeside 14: Gavin Rasmusen ran for two scores and passed for another in the decisive second quarter and the Miners topped the Knights in Plummer. Rasmusen finished with 172 rushing yards and two touchdowns and Brock Arthon added 51 yards and three short scores.
