DeGooyer guides Bucs

Jake DeGooyer’s career performance lifted Whitworth to a 47-42 nonconference win over Whittier on Saturday afternoon at Memorial Stadium in Whittier, Calif.

DeGooyer hauled in 12 passes for 232 yards and three touchdowns – all career highs for the senior.

The Pirates (2-0) got out to a quick start, building a 27-14 halftime lead, and then had to hold off the Poets’ second-half charge.

Bryan Peterson (West Valley High School) and Michael McCune each threw two touchdown passes for Whitworth. Ronnie Thomas ran for 117 yards on 31 carries and scored twice.

DeGooyer caught two of his touchdowns in the third quarter. Also with a receiving touchdown was Connor Williams, who hauled in a 63-yard pass from Peterson that gave the Pirates a 13-0 lead in the first quarter.

The Pirates finished with 546 total yards – 394 through the air and 152 on the ground.

Whitworth will play La Verne in La Verne, Calif., on Saturday.

Central Washington 56, Simon Fraser 28: The Wildcats (1-1) pulled away after halftime and beat the Clansmen (1-1) in Ellensburg.

Johri Fogerson ran for 104 yards and scored four touchdowns and Demetrius Sumler carried it 22 times for 160 yards and two scores for Central Washington.

California Lutheran 37, Pacific Lutheran 23: The 11th-ranked Kingsmen (1-0) took control in the second half and beat the Lutes (0-1) in Puyallup, Wash.

Brandon James, Dalton Ritchey and Cody Pohren all scored rushing touchdowns for PLU, which scored 17 points in the second quarter to knot the game at halftime.

Montana Tech 37, Carroll 20: Pat Hansen ran for 128 yards and three touchdowns as Montana Tech (1-1) upset the second-ranked Saints (1-2) in Butte.
