Camp Easton supporters appeal ruling

The North Idaho group that failed to persuade a judge to halt the possible sale of Camp Easton is filing an appeal with Idaho’s Supreme Court.

Attorney Scott Reed, of Coeur d’Alene, said the group Camp Easton Forever filed the appeal this week.

The next step, Reed said, is for the Supreme Court to either keep review of the civil case or assign it to Idaho’s Appeals Court.

Reed said a case of this type almost certainly will remain with the Supreme Court “because it’s an important matter.”

Earlier this summer the opponents failed to get an Idaho District Court judge to stop discussions of a possible sale of the historic Boy Scout Camp on the east shore of Lake Coeur d’Alene. They argue that Camp Easton was deeded to the Scouts forever and could not be sold for non-scouting use.

The Inland Northwest Council of the Boy Scouts of America, whose office is in Spokane, has had tentative discussions with an Arizona development company interested in buying the camp. As part of the deal, that developer, Discovery Land Co., would build a new Scout camp on the west side of the lake.

That discussion has not led to a specific offer, said the local Scout council’s executive, Tim McCandless.
