Woman killed after train hits car in Rathdrum

UPDATED: Thu., Sept. 13, 2012, 3:17 p.m.

A woman was killed this morning around 7:40 when her car was hit by a train at the Ramsey Road crossing, just north of Boekel Road, near Rathdrum.

Rebecca A. Birdsong, 22, of Rathdrum, who had been headed south on Ramsey, was struck by a westbound train, a news release from the Kootenai County Sheriff’s Office said.

Train personnel said the car stopped for the posted stop sign but the driver did not look both ways prior to driving into the path of the train, the release said.

There is no indication that drugs or alcohol was a factor.
