Obituary: Boyd, Betty Lee (Shackelton)

Age 89

BOYD,
Betty Lee (Shackelton)
(Age 89)

Passed away Thursday, August 30, 2012.

Betty was born May 22, 1923 in Newport, Washington.

She attended high school in Ione, WA, which she fondly referred to as “Tiger Tech”.

Ever tenacious and with a desire to do her fair share for the country she loved, Betty served as a true “Rosie the Riveter” building bombers for the war effort.

She attended Washington State University before continuing with her career, graduating to become a nurse at Sacred Heart.

In 1949, she married Hubert Boyd and they started Trout Valley Fish Hatchery, raising rainbow trout and eight children while also running the country store.

When her youngest were well on their way through high school, she returned to work as a charge nurse at Holy Family.

An avid WSU Cougar and Gonzaga fan, Betty loved all sports, ranging from badminton, football and baseball, to the Olympics.

She took great pride watching her son and grandsons on the gridiron in football and baseball, and daughters and granddaughters on the volleyball court and in track and field.

Never one to be outdone, Betty loved to compete on the golf course, frequenting local courses in Spokane as well as North Pend Oreille Golf and Country Club, where she repeatedly recorded top finishes at the annual Shackelton family reunion.

At the age of 73, she shot a hole in one.

Grandmother to 12 and great-grandmother to three, Betty’s true passion came from spending time with her family.

Often surrounded by those she loved Betty easily and nearly always became the life of the party with a bright and ready smile and her generous, boisterous, contagious laughter.

Her family will carry on her memory fondly, as she taught us all the meaning of toughness and determination, as well as how best to cherish loved ones.

She is survived by her two sisters; Rae and Mac McCain; Patti & Swede Bergau.

Her two sons, and six daughters: Michael Boyd, Spokane; Mary and Richard Walberg, Spokane; Alonna and Steve Farrar; Vista, CA.

; Jamie Boyd, Astoria, OR; Sherry and Paul Yost Spokane; Theresa and Paul Ward Spokane; Peter and Mary Jo Boyd Wawina, MN.

; and Susan and Ken Chartrey Valley, WA.

12 grandchildren Tara: Zev Farrar; Justin, Russell (US Marine), Brandon Chartrey (US Navy); Candice Walberg; Seth, Rachel Schurman; Sophia, Arianna Yost; Evvie, Linden Boyd; and three great-grand children: Austin Rodriguez; Lilly Chartrey; and Kylie Chartrey, as well as numerous nieces and nephews.

Her husband Hubert Boyd preceded her in death in 1995.

A Memorial wake commemorating the life of Betty Lee will be Sunday, September 16, from 11:30 a.m. - 2 p.m. at the West Central Community Center, 1603 North Belt Street, Spokane, WA.

Betty enjoyed keeping her lawn and flowerbeds healthy and well groomed.

In lieu of flowers, please plant a tree, ornamental bush or plant in her memory.
