Big plays lift Pirates to win

The Whitworth Pirates defense and special teams picked up the slack for a struggling offense en route to a 45-20 win over the La Verne Leopards in La Verne, Calif.

The Pirates (3-0) have opened a season with three straight victories on the road for the first time since 1955.

After the Leopards scored a touchdown late in the second quarter to take a 10-7 lead, Danny Welstad returned the ensuing kickoff 61 yards for a score and the Pirates never trailed again.

De’ Hall put Whitworth up 24-13 in the third quarter with a 33-yard interception return for a TD. Nic Brockhoff capped the scoring for Whitworth with a 37-yard interception return TD in the fourth quarter.

Bryan Peterson connected with Jake DeGooyer from the 3-yard line to give the Whits a 7-0 lead on their second possession of the game.

Peterson also hooked up with Austin Ehlo from 8 yards out to put the Pirates up 31-13 in the final quarter.

La Verne outgained Whitworth 390-252 for the game.

Peterson completed just 12 of 31 passes for 154 yards and two scores.

Ronnie Thomas ran for 135 yards on 27 carries, including a 75-yard TD that made it 38-20. DeGooyer finished with seven catches for 93 yards.

C. Washington 21, W.Oregon 14 (OT): Johri Fogerson ran for a career-high 123 yards and a pair of touchdowns to lift the Wildcats (2-1, 2-0) to a victory over the Wolves (0-3, 0-2) in Great Northern Athletic Conference play in Monmouth, Ore.

Fogerson, a transfer from the University of Washington, scored on a 9-yard run with 4:13 left in the game to knot the score at 14-all and scored the game-winner on his fourth carry in overtime, punching it in from 11 yards out.

Pacific Lutheran 28, Redlands 14: Dalton Ritchey passed for 285 yards and two touchdowns and Erik Holum returned an interception for another score as the Lutes (1-1) doubled up the Bullodgs (0-2) in Redlands, Calif.

Ritchey, who completed 21 of 31 passes, was 15 of 19 for 190 yards at halftime.

Carroll College 19, Rocky Mountain 6: Casey Norbeck returned a fumble 46 yards for a score in the final minute to help the Saints (2-2, 2-1) hold off the Bears (3-1, 2-1) in Frontier Conference play in Helena.

Carroll, the 12-time conference champions, scored 13 points in the final quarter to pull out the victory.

The Bears pulled within 12-6 on a 37-yard field goal by Nick Knell with 2:22 left in the game.
