Chiefs reassign winger; roster at 27

The Spokane Chiefs have reassigned 16-year-old left winger Markson Bechtold to the UFA Bisons of the Alberta Midget Hockey League on Monday.

Bechtold, the Chiefs’ third-round pick in the 2011 WHL Bantam Draft, had one goal in five pre-season games.

The move leaves Spokane with 27 players – three goaltenders, nine defensemen and 15 forwards.

Spokane won a pair of games last weekend to finish the pre-season 5-1-0, winning their last five as they head into the start of the WHL regular season Saturday against the Tri-City Americans in the Toyota Center in Kennewick.

Tri-City visits Spokane the following Saturday in the Chiefs’ home opener.

Cross country

Jon Smith, a sophomore from University, and Jessica Mildes, a freshman from Riverside, gave Community Colleges of Spokane the Northwest Athletic Association of Community Colleges’ Athletes of the Week awards for cross country.

Smith won the Carroll College Early Bird Invitational on Sept. 7, covering 6,000 metes in 19 minutes, 1 second.

Mildes finished fourth in her collegiate debut, running 4,000 meters in 14:52.
