Score one for young ambition. Early in the second half of a league-opening soccer match, Chloe Williams let one fly from 20 yards for the eventual game-winner in Lewis and Clark’s 3-1 victory at Ferris on Wednesday afternoon. With the Greater Spokane League opener tied 1-1, Williams was alone at the top of the box, and hit a high, arcing shot that took everyone by surprise. “I don’t think I’ve ever scored one of those,” said Williams, a junior forward who also scored in the first half. “I just tried to hit it on frame and hopefully it will go in.” In front of a crowd of more than 200, Ferris got on the board first when sophomore forward Maegan O’Neill hit a similar shot in the 17th minute. But Williams got the equalizer 5 minutes later on a quick pass from freshman Megan Curran 15 yards from goal and drove the ball home. Ferris had the better of it in the first half, but the young LC defense tightened as the match went on. After Williams scored the go-ahead goal, the Tigers conceded few chances the rest of the way. “We’re just looking for them to work hard, win balls out of the air, being aggressive and not giving up,” said second-year coach LC Katie Carpenter, whose squad has just one senior on the roster and nine underclassmen. “They’re a tight group and they communicated well.” Another long shot, this one from junior midfielder Lindsey Dreher in the 57th minute, provided the match’s final score. The Tigers’ next match is Friday at Mt. Spokane, while Ferris faces North Central at Pacific Park. Both matches begin at 4 p.m. In other GSL matches: Preseason favorite Central Valley got goals from six players in a 6-1 victory over host North Central. The Bears conceded the opening goal, but Paige Gallaway equalized 3 minutes before halftime on an assist from Ashtyn Turnbow, who also scored. … Rylee Rassier scored in the 87th minute to give the University Titans a 3-2 double-overtime win over the Highlanders at Shadle Park. Rassier took Brittany Bruegeman’s indirect kick from midfield and scored from 6 yards out. Shadle had tied the match at the 73rd minute on Cathie Berg’s goal… Madison Boyd had an assist and a goal as the Mt. Spokane defeated visiting Mead 3-1. Mt. Spokane led 3-0 by halftime. Junior goalkeeper Shannon McReynolds came up big in the final 20 minutes to help secure the win. … Rogers scored first on a penalty kick but host Gonzaga Prep picked up the next four, including the final two by freshman Mallory Payne in a 4-1 victory. Rogers was outshot 26-2 with Gaby Vazquez making several big saves to keep Rogers in the match that was tied 1-1 at the half. Jess Geibel’s free kick from 30 yards out gave G-Prep the lead after Wendy Gregory had tied it.
