Whitman stops Whitworth in four sets

Jillian Davis, Olivia Nielson and Courtney Brewer had 10 kills apiece Wednesday as visiting Whitman (3-7, 1-2) turned back Whitworth 3-0 in Northwest Conference volleyball.

The Missionaries took control in the third set, with the score tied at 10 and the teams having split the first two sets. Brewer started the charge with a kill, and Whitman won 25-17.

Jalana White led the Pirates (4-6, 0-3) with 17 kills and 13 digs. Nicole Leonard added 11 kills and 27 digs.

Whitworth will host Willamette on Saturday night in another NWC match.

Women’s soccer

Lateashea Currie powered for six goals and three assists as Community Colleges of Spokane (4-0-1, 3-0-0 NWAACC) strolled to a 13-1 win at Yakima Valley (0-4-1, 0-3-0).

Tasha Luu added four goals and three assists for the Sasquatch.

Golf

Ex-University of Idaho standout Ryan Benzel holds a two-shot lead after the second round in the Pacific Northwest PGA Professional Championship.

Benzel is at 9 under par following rounds of 67 and 68 at Circling Raven for a 135 total. Manito assistant pro Corey Prugh, with scores of 66 and 71, and Walla Walla’s Brady Sharp are two strokes behind. Chewelah’s Jason Pitt fired a second-round 68 and is in a three-way tie at 138 heading into today’s final round.
