TV Notes: Kimmel takes the reins at Emmys

Chuck Barney Mcclatchy-Tribune

Don’t miss

“THE 64TH PRIMETIME EMMY AWARDS” - Jimmy Kimmel is on a roll these days. Not only is the late-night jokester hosting TV’s big bash for the first time, he could take home his first Emmy. While he works to keep the telecast from being its usual snoozefest, much of our focus will be on the best-drama category, where “Mad Men” tries for its record fifth trophy against some stiff competition that includes “Downton Abbey,” “Homeland,” “Breaking Bad,” “Game of Thrones” and “Boardwalk Empire.” 8 p.m. Sunday, ABC.

Other bets

SUNDAY: Most of you probably didn’t notice, but, “Treme” is indeed still airing. The New Orleans-set drama returns for its third season of jazzy tunes and post-Katrina angst. 10 p.m., HBO.

MONDAY: Are those wedding bells we hear as “How I Met Your Mother” launches Season 8? Why, yes, but let’s hope Barney (Neil Patrick Harris) and/or Robin (Colbie Smulders) don’t get cold feet. 8 p.m., CBS.

MONDAY: “Dancing With the Stars” breaks out the big guns as past winners and fan favorites return for an all-star edition. Among those ready to rumba: Kirstie Alley, Emmitt Smith, Bristol Palin and Shawn Johnson. 8 p.m., ABC.

TUESDAY: Last season, “NCIS” ended with a great big kaboom. Now, it’s time for Gibbs (Mark Harmon) and his team to pick up the pieces. 8 p.m., CBS.

TUESDAY: After stealing scenes on “The Office,” Mindy Kaling is a leading lady on “The Mindy Project.” It’s an offbeat sitcom about a doctor struggling with the fact that life doesn’t always turn out like the romantic comedies she craves. 9:30 p.m., Fox.

TUESDAY: “Vegas,” one of the season’s best new dramas, hits the jackpot with an awesome cast: Dennis Quaid plays a sheriff who tangles with a mob boss (Michael Chiklis) in the early days of Sin City. 10 p.m., CBS.

WEDNESDAY: Now that Gloria (Sofia Vergara) is preggers on “Modern Family,” she’s got to figure out how to break the news to Jay (Ed O’Neill). Pray for her. 9 p.m., ABC.

WEDNESDAY: “Law & Order: SVU” returns to wrap up last season’s stunning cliffhanger, which had Captain Cragen (Dann Florek) waking up next to a dead hooker. That’s never a good thing. 9 p.m., NBC.

THURSDAY: “Last Resort” offers war games, government conspiracy, action and romance in one package. Andre Braugher shines as the captain of a submarine crew that goes rogue after disobeying an order to nuke Pakistan. 8 p.m., ABC.

THURSDAY: “Elementary” cooks up a New York-based Sherlock Holmes (Jonny Lee Miller) and pairs him with a female Watson (Lucy Liu). Will it work? We haven’t a clue. 10 p.m., CBS.

FRIDAY: The final season of “Fringe” opens in 2036. That’s when our heroes, released from amber, join the fight to rid the world of the evil, pasty-faced Observers. 9 p.m., Fox.

SATURDAY: The campy TV film “Lake Placid: The Final Chapter” features rampaging crocodiles (Yea!). Even better: It stars horror icon Robert Englund. 9 p.m., Syfy.
