Lorenzo, CCS men triumph

With freshman Cole Lorenzo carding a 5-under-par 211 for 54 holes to claim medalist honors, Community Colleges of Spokane won the men’s division of the North Idaho College Invitational that wound up Monday.

CCS had an 883 team score for a six-stroke margin over Lewis-Clark State and host NIC. LCSC finished second on a tiebreaker.

Senior Emily Guthrie of Whitworth shot the best second-day score of the women’s golf event, a 75, to tie for second at 234. Trish Gibbons of College of Idaho was medalist with a 229.

Lewis-Clark State won the women’s division by 26 strokes with a 950. Whitworth was fourth with a 1,072.

Faced with the possibility that the Yakima Valley’s air-quality issues may not improve by this weekend, the 39th annual Sunfair Invitational has been postponed a week to Oct. 6.

Meet director Phil English said there is too much unpredictably in the forecast to hope for the best. He said the time schedule and number of races will remain the same. One obstacle is bumping up against the 60-team Richland Invitational, which attracts many of the same teams.

Women’s soccer

Liz Boyden, Idaho’s fifth-year senior from Ferris, was named the Western Athletic Conference Goalkeeper of the Week for her performances against Utah Valley and UNLV last week.

Boyden allowed one goal – an own goal in a 1-0 loss to UNLV - as the Vandals went 1-1, including her 14th career shutout. It was her first honor this year and third career weekly WAC honor.

Men’s soccer

Nate Pacheco, a sophomore forward at Gonzaga, was named the West Coast Conference Player of the Week after scoring his first two goals of the season.

Pacheco’s goals helped the Bulldogs win two matches and finish second on goal differential to host Oregon State in the Nike Soccer Classic and he was named to the all-tournament team.
