WSU’s men win Dash Thomas Memorial

After a second-round surge, the Washington State men’s golf team hung on during Tuesday’s third and final round and won the Dash Thomas Memorial at The Club at Spurwing in Meridian, Idaho.

The Cougars finished at 9-under-par 843, six strokes ahead of second-place finisher Utah Valley. WSU shot a 275 during Monday’s second round – the lowest score of the tournament.

Three Cougars finished in second place at 2 under – Sang Lee, Michael Anderson and Hank Frame.

• Gonzaga took 10th place after posting a 5-over 869 at the Mark Simpson Colorado Invitational in Denver. Oregon State shot 21 under to win the event.

Sean Walsh was GU’s top finisher. Walsh shot a 4-under 212 for the three-day tournament.

• Moscow High graduate Chris Williams finished tied for second with a three-round total of 210 to help lead Washington to fourth place at the PING-Golfweek Preview at the Capital City Club in Alpharetta, Ga.

Women’s golf

Washington State’s Kristen Rue shot a 4-under 68 to pull away and win the Cougar Cup at Palouse Ridge Golf Club in Pullman. Rue entered the final round tied with three other players.

The Cougars finished in third place at 19 over. Gonzaga finished second at 18 over. The Bulldogs were led by Raychelle Santos, who took fifth with a 1-over 217.

Honors

Four Whitworth athletes earned recognition from the Northwest Conference.

Football player Paul Miller (Mead HS) was named the conference’s defensive player of the week and Robert Thullen earned the conference special teams player of the week award.

Will Wren was named the NWC men’s soccer defensive player of the week and Mackenzie Grow (Lewis and Clark HS) was named the women’s soccer offensive player of the week.
