University receiver Flynn breaks hand

University High senior wide receiver Austin Flynn had a breakout game two weeks ago in a wild 48-35 win over Shadle Park.

A few days later he had a bad break.

Flynn caught six passes, four for touchdowns, against Shadle. Then three days later in practice, he was diving for a pass when he broke a hand.

“We were doing a middle screen and he dove for the ball,” U-Hi coach Rob Bartlett said. “He landed on his hand wrong and broke it. He wasn’t going to get it fit for a cast, but we told him he needed to.”

He wasn’t able to play wide receiver last Friday, but he padded up the fully encased hand and played cornerback. He defended Lewis and Clark’s 2011 all-Greater Spokane League first-team receiver Brennan Schon, who had two catches for 15 yards and a touchdown.

Somehow Flynn got an interception.

“It wasn’t the most textbook pick,” Bartlett said. “It was all body and elbows.”

Before the injury, Flynn ranked fifth in the league with 11 catches for 202 yards.

“It’s a real blow to us,” Bartlett said. “He was our go-to guy in every way, shape and form. He’ll do a great job at cornerback but we’re going to miss him on the other side of the ball.”

Oral commitments

Reardan senior 6-foot post Kelsey Moos has given Arizona State University an oral commitment.

“I visited their campus during a spring AAU tournament and I knew it was the best fit for me,” Moos said.

She also attended a camp at ASU in June.

“After looking at their program and their coaches, they’re top of the line,” said Moos, who carries a 3.95 grade-point average. “And their academics are incredible.”

Moos averaged 20 points and nine rebounds in leading Reardan to a second consecutive State 2Be championship last year. She was the 2B player of the year. She will start for a fourth straight year this winter.

She’s been a four-year starter in volleyball, too. Like basketball, the volleyball team has won two straight state titles.

She’s related to Washington State University athletic director Bill Moos. He and her father are first cousins.

• Lewiston senior point guard Karlee Wilson has given the University of Idaho an oral commitment.

The 5-3 Wilson, a three-year starter, led Lewiston to 5A state titles the last two years.

Wilson told the Lewiston Tribune that she picked Idaho because it’s close to home.
