Idaho goes five sets to beat Texas State
The Idaho Vandals won the first two sets, then held on for a 25-14, 25-13, 23-25, 21-25, 15-8 Western Athletic Conference volleyball victory over Texas State (6-9, 1-3) Thursday night at Moscow, Idaho.
The Vandals (5-10, 3-2) got 19 kills from Allison Walker while getting 13 kills on .500 hitting from Alyssa Schultz and 10 more on .600 hitting from Alex Sele.
Idaho outhit the Bobcats .301 to .170.
• The Gonzaga Bulldogs picked up their first West Coast Conference victory of the season, rallying for a 20-25, 25-21, 27-25, 25-19 win over host Portland.
Jordan Gasser had 15 kills while Savannah Blinn and Meredith Crenshaw added 12 apiece.
• Eastern Washington had a 2-1 lead in sets but fell in five to Southern Utah 25-18, 16-25, 17-25, 25-22, 15-11 at Cheney as the Eagles absorbed their 16th loss without a win this season.
EWU (0-16, 0-5) got 13 kills each from Kelsey Julian and Allie Schumacher. Celeste Crosby added a career-high 22 digs.
The Thunderbirds (7-9, 3-2) outblocked the Eagles 17-8.
Pullman (5-0 Great Northern League) remained undefeated in league play after a 5-0 road victory over winless Colville (0-5 GNL). Bre Daugherty scored three goals, including the match’s only score in the first half. That came on a penalty kick following a handball. … Morgan Williams scored three goals and Halie Gronenthal two as West Valley (5-1) downed host Deer Park (1-4) 6-3. … Kristina Sly made the clinching goal in a 5-4 shootout victory for Clarkston (3-2) at Cheney (2-3). Both regulation goals came in the second half, with Chae Brown scoring at the 58th minute for Cheney before the Bantams’ Leah Edens answered at the 62nd minute.
Host St. Maries rolled to a 9-0 victory over Priest River in an Intermountain League match. Jesse Suchoski and Austin Cordell each scored three goals.
Braden Barranco scored three touchdowns as the host Newport Grizzlies (1-3) rolled to 27 first-half points and downed the Lake City JV 27-20. Barranco scored on a 40-yard run and on a pair of passes from Ryan Rapp.
Former Eastern Washington quarterback Matt Nichols will make his first Canadian Football League start when his Edmonton Eskimos play the host Calgary Stampeders tonight.
Nichols is starting because of injuries to their first- and second-string quarterbacks.
