Obituary: Smith, Ruth L.

Age 96

SMITH, Ruth L. Passed away on Easter Sunday, March 31, at the age of 96.

Ruth was born November 10, 1916 in Portland, OR to Edward W. and Mabel Johnson.

She attended Pomona College and graduated from the University of Oregon in 1938.

She was a dental assistant and traveled extensively.

On June 7, 1941, she married Edgar L. (Bud) Smith in Portland, OR.

She was an Army wife during WWII, and later settled in St. John where Bud farmed, and they raised their four children.

Ruth and Bud moved to Spokane in September 1984 where she enjoyed reading, traveling, and playing bridge with Bud, her husband of 66 years who passed away in January 2008.

She is also preceded in passing by her son, David E. Smith (Tina) of St. John.

Ruth is survived by three children: Colonel (Ret) Edgar L. Smith, III (Laura Richburg), Montgomery, AL; Suzanne S. Miller (Bill), Mesa, AZ; Peter T. Smith (Melanie), Richland, WA; seven grandchildren; and thirteen great-grandchildren.

A celebration of Ruth’s life will be held this Friday, April 5, at 1pm at Touchmark on South Hill, 2929 S. Waterford Dr., Spokane, WA 99203.
