Lavern spent most of his life in the logging industry with the exception of spending time on a crab fishing vessel in the Bering Sea.
His love of the outdoors included hunting, fishing, and wood cutting.
He spent most of his time with his boys and taught them to ride motocross bikes, fish, and hunt.
In his early years he rode motocross competitively and was a natural on any motorcycle.
Berney is survived by his loving parents, Lee and Edna Hegel, siblings Les Hegel, Larry Hegel, Annie Hansen, Angie Anstrom, Anita Hotchkiss, Leo Hegel, Louie Hegel, and Aletta Broadrick.
He was preceded in death by his brothers Lee F. Hegel, Jr. and Lenny Hegel.
The mountains and hills were his home and where he always longed to stay.
He now walks those hills in heaven with Jesus.
