Schools receive state achievement awards

The Office of Superintendent of Public Instruction has announced winners of the 2012 Washington Achievement Awards, given to schools based on test scores and graduation rates. A total of 381 schools in the state received awards in seven categories.

Valley schools won the following awards:

• Overall Excellence: Seth Woodard Elementary in the West Valley School District and Continuous Curriculum School in East Valley School District.

• Math: University High School in the Central Valley School District.

• Science: Adams, Broadway, Chester, Greenacres, Liberty Lake, Ponderosa, South Pines, Sunrise and University elementary schools in CVSD; Ness, Pasadena Park and Seth Woodard elementary schools in WVSD.

• Extended Graduation Rate: West Valley High School.

• Closing Achievement Gaps: East Valley High School.

• High Progress (Title I eligible or participating schools only): Seth Woodard.

EVSD kindergarten registration

East Valley School District is now taking registrations for kindergarten for the 2013-14 school year.

Children must be 5 years old by Aug. 31 to enter kindergarten.

Parents need to bring a certified birth certificate and an immunization record showing Varicella (chickenpox), DTaP/DTP/DT/TD, polio, MMR, HEP B are all up to date.

At Trent, Trentwood, Otis Orchards and East Farms, the office will be open until the last day of school, June 14. School secretaries will return Aug. 15 and the first day of school is Aug. 29.

At Continuous Curriculum School, the office will be open until June 28. Secretaries will return July 30 and school begins Aug. 13.

Knowledge Bowl

Valley Christian School came in first place at the State B Knowledge Bowl in Arlington, Wash.

This is the 13th consecutive year the team has competed in the tournament, answering almost 350 questions during the course of the day.

Members of the team are Armand Santone, Zach Tabish, Tim Swank, Connor Gilbert, Joey Segalla and Ben Terry.

St. Mary’s gala

St. Mary’s Catholic School will present its 41st annual Legacy Gala on April 20 at Mirabeau Park Hotel, 1100 N. Sullivan Road.

The event will kick off at 4:30 p.m. with a silent auction, followed by dinner at 6 p.m. and a live auction.

Items on the block include a 2012-13 Gonzaga University basketball autographed by the entire men’s team, a one-week condo stay at Marriott Mountainside Resort in Park City, Utah, for six to eight people, a Shih-Poo puppy, yard makeover and more.

Tickets are $50 per person.

Students earn regional art awards

Student artists were recently honored at the 40th annual NorthEast Washington Educational Service District 101 high school art show at the downtown Spokane Public Library.

Kaitlyn Sabie, of East Valley, and Payton Thorson, of Cheney High School, tied for first place in the judge’s choice category. Sabie’s piece is “My Prince.” Thorson’s is “Where was my Fault?”

Other East Valley artists recognized are: Tristan Albrecht, first place for “Dad’s Guitar”; Cooper Goodwin, first place for “Nova”; Mallory Munns, first place for “Neglect”; Sam Geibel, second place for “Peaceful Sleep”; Sienna McDermott, second place, Superintendent’s Choice for “V-Dub Bug Luv”; Mikayla Smits, second place for “Softball”; Victoria Feistner, third place for “Me, Myself, and I”; Keanna Lagai, third place for “Innocence”; Minh Le, third place for “Fate’s Bouquet”; Haley Madison, third place for “Beauty at its Finest”; and Alexander Zurfluh, third place for “The Masks We Wear.”

Other Cheney High artists recognized for their artwork are My Nguyen, receiving the first place Avista Award, for “Trong Dong,” and Angelina Totmin, given the People’s Choice award for her piece, “Innocent Sound.”

Ferris artist Sydney Wilson was awarded second place staff choice – NEWESD 101 for “Steps of Life.”

Central Valley artist Madison Kinsolving received second place for “Preston.” Student artist Kaylee Fuchs at Freeman High School was given an honorable mention for her artwork “The Maritime Bear.”

Drill teams honored

The Lewis and Clark High School Drill Team competed at the Washington State Drill Team Competition, March 22 and 23 in Yakima, taking second place in the military division and placing third in the kick division.

Mt. Spokane, Shadle Park, Ferris, and West Valley high school drill teams also participated in the competition. Mt. Spokane was awarded eighth in the pom division, seventh in the hip hop division. Shadle Park received fifth place in the pom division; in the individual drill down division, team members Zac Carolus placed fifth and Nicole Mollica was awarded first place.

West Valley received seventh place in the pom division, third place in the hip hop division, third place in the military division. Ferris was awarded sixth place in the pom division and received 10th place in the hip hop division

The five Spokane area teams were among 36 drill teams to compete.

Running Start presentations planned

Spokane Falls Community College, Spokane Community College and the Institute for Extended Learning education centers will hold Running Start information nights during the month of April.

The sessions will provide high school juniors and seniors and parents information needed to learn how to earn college credits while completing high school academic requirements. Students and parents can meet Running Start students to hear about their experiences. Running Start counselors and coordinators also will be available to answer questions and explain how students can enroll in the program. Running Start college credits transfer to most four-year state colleges.

• Thursday at 7 p.m. at Spokane Community College, 1810 N. Greene St., in the Lair-Student Center Sasquatch Room, Building 6.
