Unattended, but legal

Recent events have again raised the issue of the legality of leaving an unattended car running. Comments in letters to the editor of The Spokesman-Review have stated that leaving an unattended vehicle running is illegal.

It should be clarified that it is illegal to do so on the street, but not illegal to leave an unattended vehicle running on your private property. The party whose running car was stolen from his driveway last week was not breaking the law. Foolish perhaps, but not illegal.
