GU men earn rare golf tourney win
Top-ten finishes by Peter Gullickson and Sean Walsh sparked the Gonzaga Bulldogs to their first men’s golf tournament title since 2005.
Gullickson and Walsh each carded 3-under-par 67s on the final day Tuesday as the Bulldogs cruised to a six-stroke victory over runner-up Colorado at the Wyoming Cowboy Classic at Talking Stick North Course in Scottsdale, Ariz.
Gullickson finished the two-round event with a 2-over 142 to tie for seventh place, while Walsh was another stroke back to tie for 10th.
James Fahy shot a final-round 68 to finish tied for 25th at 147. The Bulldogs finished with a 574 total in the 24-team tournament.
The Idaho Vandals tied with Colorado State for ninth place at 593.
Sean McMullen and Zach Wanderscheid led the way for Idaho with 6-over 146s. The pair tied for 19th place.
UC Santa Barbara’s Glen Scher was the medalist at 138. Four players tied for second, two strokes off the pace.
The tourney title was the third in the history of the Gonzaga men’s program.
The CC Spokane Sasquatch rolled to a 3-1, 10-4 doubleheader sweep of visiting Big Bend in NWAACC play.
Bre Warren hit a two-run home run and Nicole Lane fanned 11 in seven innings in the opener.
Tasji Urhausen ripped a three-run double and Megan Skillingstad added a solo homer in the second-game romp.
