A hands-on lawmaking experience

A sophomore at Freeman High School spent a week in Olympia working as a page in the Washington state Senate.

Matea Ped, was sponsored by Sen. Michael Baumgartner to work as one of 16 students during the 11th week of the 2013 legislative session.

Student pages are responsible for transporting documents between offices, spend time in the Senate chamber and attend page school to learn about parliamentary procedure and the legislative process.

Ped is a cheerleader, participates in Future Business Leaders of America and likes to play golf.

“Learning about the Legislature and government has been a lot of fun” Ped said. “Being here in Olympia taught me a lot about self-confidence. It takes a thick skin to be able to do what the senators do on a daily basis. I am glad I was able to take this opportunity to learn as much as I have.”

Scholarship opportunity

The Greater Spokane Valley Chamber of Commerce is now accepting applications for the Sam Campbell Memorial Scholarship.

Local graduating high school seniors who plan to study a business program in college, university or a vocational school are eligible.

Applications are available to download at spokanevalleychamber.org under the Chamber Foundation tab. They should be mailed or hand-delivered to Greater Spokane Valley Chamber of Commerce, 1421 N. Meadowwood Lane, Suite 10, Liberty Lake, WA 99019.

The deadline is May 1.
