Brawl has aftermath

L.A.’s Matt Kemp, left, confronts San Diego's Carlos Quentin, right, following Thursday’s brawl in San Diego. (Associated Press)

Los Angeles Dodgers slugger Matt Kemp confronted San Diego’s Carlos Quentin Thursday night as they were leaving Petco Park in San Diego after the teams had a bench-clearing brawl that left Los Angeles pitcher Zack Greinke with a broken collarbone.

Kemp asked Quentin why he charged Greinke after getting hit by a pitch. Kemp walked up to Quentin near the players’ exit and the two went nose-to-nose before being separated.

Kemp, Quentin, Greinke and Jerry Hairston Jr. were ejected following a sixth-inning fight during Los Angeles’ 3-2 victory.

On Friday, Quentin was suspended eight games and Los Angeles infielder Hairston Jr. one game. Hairston incited a second melee when he ran across the field gesturing at someone in the Padres dugout.

Quentin and Hairston are playing, pending appeal by the players’ association.

Greinke will need surgery to repair his broken left collarbone, and the team says he is expected to return in eight weeks.

Reyes carted off

Toronto shortstop Jose Reyes was carted off the field after he appeared to hurt his left ankle while sliding into second base against the Kansas City Royals in Kansas City, Mo.

The speedy Reyes was attempting to steal second and made a late slide just a couple steps from the bag. His left ankle rolled beneath him as he slid over second base.
