Two-hour Idaho standoff ends in burglary arrest

Coeur d’Alene Police officers arrested a man following a two-hour standoff on Saturday morning after he broke into a neighboring home and fought with the homeowner, according to a Coeur d’Alene Police Department news release.

The homeowner came home to the 4200 block of Abbey Road to find a man inside prior to 5:15 a.m., the release said. Police say the suspect, later identified as William A. Velis, 22, flashed a gun during the fight and then ran to his home in the same area.

Officers called the SWAT team to the scene because Velis refused to communicate with authorities and a young child was reportedly inside the home. Authorities closed Atlas Road near Abbey during the standoff, the release said.

Velis eventually came outside and handed over his unharmed 2-year-old child to his wife. Officers took Velis into custody and booked him into Kootenai County Jail.
