Bucs’ Comito continues to dominate

Carter Comito continued to dominate with wins in the shot put and discus and the Whitworth Pirates men cruised to first place in the Washington division at the WAR VI track and field meet Saturday at Spokane Falls Community College.

Comito threw the shot put 17.91 meters and reached 55.30 meters in the discus.

The CCS men took second place, followed by Gonzaga and Washington State.

Dylan Seitz won both hurdles events for CCS. Seitz claimed the 110-meter hurdles in 14.97 seconds and finished in 53.94 seconds in the 400-meter hurdles.

Gonzaga had a first-through-fourth finish in the 5,000-meter run. Ned Fischer won in 14 minutes, 51.59 seconds. He was followed by teammates Tate Kelly (14:54.64), Nick Roche (14:57.09) and Patrick Richie (15:01.92).

The Idaho men took first place in the Northwest division.

Elise Jepsen took first place in the women’s high jump and led Eastern Washington victory in the Washington women’s division. Jepsen cleared 1.6 meters.

EWU also claimed victories in both team relays.

Washington State, which took second place, had four individual winners. Bree Winfrey won the 200 and Morgan Clem claimed the 100 hurdles. Shantae Young won the long jump and Carly Fitzpatrick took the pole vault.

Softball

Whitworth (20-16, 14-10) pieced together some timely hits in the second game and earned a split with George Fox in a Northwest Conference doubleheader at Marks Field in Spokane.

The Bruins (16-22, 13-13) won the opener 5-3, despite a two-run home run from the Pirates’ Jamie Brunner.

In the second game, Whitworth scored five runs in the sixth inning and held on for a 5-1 win.

• Wenatchee Valley (27-3, 17-1) swept Community Colleges of Spokane (14-13, 11-7) in an NWAACC doubleheader in Wenatchee.

The Knights won the opener 8-0 and edged the Sasquatch 3-1 in the nightcap.

• Amber Freeman and Haley Steele drove in two runs apiece and No. 2 Arizona State (37-5, 8-3) evened its Pac-12 Conference series with Washington (32-11, 10-4) with a 7-1 win over the Huskies in Tempe, Ariz.

Men’s golf

Whitworth’s Joey DeGroff shot 3-under 69 and the Pirates took first place at the Washington Cup at the Links at Moses Pointe in Moses Lake.

Whitworth finished with a 309. Pacific Lutheran was second at 314.

• Washington’s Chris Williams (Moscow, Idaho) shot a second-round 70 and is tied for sixth at the Western Intercollegiate at Pasatiempo Golf Course in Santa Cruz, Calif. The Huskies are in sixth place.

Women’s golf

Whitworth senior Emily Guthrie shot a 2-under 72 – her lowest round of the year – and the Pirates defeated Community Colleges of Spokane in a dual match at Indian Canyon Golf Course in Spokane. The Pirates finished with a 322 while CCS shot 372.

Women’s rowing

Gonzaga won all six of its races at the George Washington Invitational in Washington, D.C.

The Bulldogs’ varsity eight-plus boat earned a 6-second victory over George Washington in its first race. Gonzaga’s varsity eight-plus later beat Saint Joseph’s by 15 seconds.
