WIAA shrine tabs Browning
Dave Browning, who went from an All-Bi-County League senior season at Liberty High School to a six-year career in the NFL following stops at Spokane Falls Community College and the University of Washington, is one of nine individuals who will be inducted into the Washington Interscholastic Activities Association Hall of Fame on May 8 in Renton.
Browning, a defensive end, played two years at Spokane Falls and two at UW before he was selected in the second round of the NFL draft by the Oakland Raiders in 1978. He spent five seasons with the Raiders, winning a Super Bowl ring in 1981, and finished his pro career with New England in 1983.
Joining him in the Class of 2013 will be Takiyah Jackson, athlete, Lakeside and Franklin high schools, basketball and track; Keith Gilbertson Sr., coach, Snohomish, multi sports; Marco Malich, coach, Peninsula, baseball; Sandy Schneider, coach, Lakeside (Seattle), girls basketball.
Also, Henry DeYoung, administrator, WIAA; Carol Finney, Yakima, volleyball and basketball official; Mel Moore, Yakima, contributor (longtime state baseball and basketball tournament manager); and Ted Christensen, Inglemoor, fine arts (band).
Baseball
Gonzaga will take its newly attained No. 24 national ranking in the Baseball America poll into its final meeting of the season with Washington State tonight at 6 in Washington Trust Field at GU.
The Bulldogs (23-10-1), who were ranked 21st in the Baseball America poll on March 25 before dropping out, moved back into the rankings on the strength of an eight-game winning streak that has them atop the West Coast Conference standings.
GU defeated WSU twice previously this season in Pullman, 10-8 and 7-2.
• Levi Pereira, a 6-foot-1 first baseman-outfielder-catcher from Coeur d’Alene High School, the 2012 North Idaho Player of the Year, has signed a letter of intent with Gonzaga for the 2013-14 school year.
He was Idaho 5A All-State as a junior after leading the state with nine home runs and 47 RBIs.
Track & field
Whitworth’s Peter Delap and Christina Dobbins lead the decathlon and heptathlon, respectively, after the first day of the Northwest Conference Multi-Events Championships in Tacoma.
Delap, a junior, has 3,371 points after five events that included tying for first in the high jump (6 foot, 1 1/2 inches) and tying for second in the shot (34-10 1/4).
Dobbins, a sophomore, won three of the four heptathlon events – high jump (5-4 1/2), 100 hurdles and 200 meters – in compiling 2,581 points. Teammate Emily Moore is ninth (2,141).
College golf
Freshman Raychelle Santos shot 1-under-par 71 Monday for second place to lead three Bulldogs in the top 10 and Gonzaga is in the thick of the West Coast Conference women’s championships at Gold Mountain-Olympic Course in Bremerton, Wash., after the first round of the 54-hole tournament.
Defending champion Victoria Fallgren (74) and Genna Dodge (Post Falls, 76) helped lead the Bulldogs to a 298, five shots back of five-time reigning champion Pepperdine.
Grace Na of Pepperdine leads with a 2-under 70.
• Gonzaga freshman Sean Walsh shot a par 72 to tie for seventh after the first round of the WCC men’s tournament on the Gold Mountain Olympic Course, but the rest of the Bulldogs didn’t fare as well.
GU was 15 shots over par at 303, which left the Bulldogs seventh in the eight-school field, 15 shots back of reigning champion Saint Mary’s, which has a three-shot lead.
Three share the individual lead with 2-under 70s.
Tennis
Victoria Lozano, a junior who went 2-1 in singles and 2-0 in doubles as Idaho’s No. 1 player in three matches last week, was named the Western Athletic Conference women’s player of the week. It’s her third WAC weekly honor, but the first this season.
