Oregon proposed 2-year probation

COLLEGE FOOTBALL: The University of Oregon proposed a self-imposed two-year probation and the loss of a scholarship for three years because of possible recruiting violations involving the Ducks’ football program.

The university released documents late Monday that included a proposed summary disposition from September which discusses the violations and characterizes at least one as “major.”

The NCAA began looking into possible violations following reports about payments Oregon made to recruiting services, including a $25,000 payment to Willie Lyles and Houston-based Complete Scouting Services in 2010. Lyles had a connection with an Oregon recruit.

The case is expected to go before the infractions committee this year.

M’s buy majority of TV network

MLB: The Seattle Mariners and DIRECTV Sports Networks have announced partnership on a new regional sports network where the Mariners will be the majority stakeholder in the operation.

The deal was announced on Tuesday and will run through the conclusion of the 2030 baseball season. DIRECTV Sports Networks will oversee the daily management of the network.

The Mariners said the new network will continue to operate under the ROOT Sports brand. The channel will continue to show other pro, college and high school sports events.

Ohio State hires McGuff from UW

WOMEN’S BASKETBALL: Kevin McGuff is the new coach at Ohio State, three weeks after signing a contract extension with the University of Washington.

Ohio State announced the hiring Tuesday.

The 43-year-old McGuff, who spent nine years as the head coach at Xavier before winning 41 games the last two seasons at UW, follows Jim Foster.

McGuff signed a contract extension with the Huskies through the 2019-20 season.
