Waterproof Your Wedding Look

Tips to keep your makeup fresh, even if a few tears of joy make an appearance

Worried about becoming a raccoon-eyed sobbing mess on your big day? These preventative makeup measures are here to help. Look Smart To avoid looking like a character from the movie “Corpse Bride,” waterproof eyeliner is a must, says Sara Biria, a Sephora PRO Lead makeup artist based in New York. Biria recommends Make Up For Ever’s Aqua Eyes, a waterproof/smudge-proof/fade-proof eyeliner that can be worn all day without creasing (it also will serve as a cream eye shadow, creating the perfect base). Waterproof mascara can look dry, especially in pictures, Biria notes, but she does like Diorshow’s powdered finish, which can help prevent running. For quick fixes when a river runs through the rest of your makeup, Biria advises having loose, translucent powder nearby. “Most pressed powders contain talc, which can reflect and leave a white film on the skin,” Biria says. Her pick: Laura Mercier’s Secret Brightening Powder. Silky and light, use it to set concealer when getting ready, and reapply it once all your makeup - and any future touchup - is done. Wipe Out Kasey Skobel-Conyers, owner of Bliss Wedding & Event Design in Columbus, Ohio, loves it when her brides use an heirloom or new, personalized handkerchief to dab away tears during the ceremony. “You can wrap it around the handle of your bouquet for easy use, and it’s a lovely, sentimental keepsake.” Also consider gifting them to your ladies in waiting. “I hate seeing bridesmaids stuffing Kleenex in their dresses,” Skobel-Conyers says. “It’s just not appropriate.” Tactical Measures If the bride (or groom!) is an especially emotional person, a first look prior to the ceremony is a great idea, says Skobel-Conyers. You can indulge in the majority of your tears privately and then walk down the aisle with refreshed makeup. Chances are your eyes will also be a little less red and puffy for any group pictures post-I do’s.
