In brief: CdA native Grubb is Truman Scholar
Coeur d’Alene native Mariah Grubb has received a $30,000 Truman Scholarship for graduate studies.
Grubb is a junior at Willamette University in Salem. She plans on getting a graduate degree in international sustainable development.
Grubb is among 62 Truman Scholars – the only one from Idaho – selected from 629 candidates. The recipients were chosen on the basis of their academic and leadership accomplishments and potential for becoming public service leaders.
In addition to money for graduate studies, scholars receive benefits including priority admission and supplemental financial aid; leadership training; and special internship opportunities with the federal government.
Grubb’s goal is to work in international development or humanitarian aid.
According to her profile on the Truman Scholarship website, she plans to spend this summer in a rural village in Rwanda “learning about social entrepreneurship and assisting the community in the development of sustainable solutions to pressing environmental, health and economic problems.”
Man shot in leg;
one suspect arrested
One man was shot in the leg Wednesday night in a reported drive-by shooting in the 2200 block of West Broadway Avenue.
Spokane police were called to the area just before 8:30 p.m. for reports of about five gunshots fired and people running through alleys, according to a news release.
A witness provided a description of a vehicle involved and police located it speeding north on Post Street, the release said.
After fleeing from police, the vehicle failed to make a left turn from West Queen Avenue to North Stevens Street and slid into a yard, striking a tree. Two people fled the vehicle.
Police tracked the driver after a foot pursuit and identified him as 32-year-old Ricky L. Leon, the release said.
While police were tracking Leon, a man arrived at a local hospital with a gunshot wound to his leg.
“It was determined that the victim at the hospital and the drive-by shooting were related,” the release said.
Leon was booked into the Spokane County Jail on suspicion of first-degree assault.
Apartment fire put out quickly
Fire damaged a lower South Hill apartment Thursday morning.
Spokane Fire Department crews found smoke coming out of the front door at 1110 S. Adams St.
Crews quickly extinguished a small fire inside one of the units and found nobody inside.
The cause of the fire was being investigated. Damage to the structure was estimated at $10,000.
